what about?
Hi! Anyone staying in hougang or sengkang received letters asking to install the free 15m fibre cable to your homes?![]()

what about?

I stay at Old Airport Road, already installed.
Be prepared for lots of dust because most likely, they will drill a hole to slot the cable into your home.
I think you have to go to http://www.opennet.com.sg/network-rollout/ to set an appointment.
Don't expect top class work though, I have false ceiling and the guys told me they don't have the time to run the cable in the false ceiling, so end up added unsightly trunking under the false ceiling
Had to pay for the extra length of cable as well, because exceeded the 15metres.
Oh well... for a better future.

Hee... just complaining a little bit.
Because the recommended end point should be next to where your TV is, and due to design of flats at my area, the cabling will definitely exceed the stipulated 15 meters.
The guys from OpenNet told me almost all the units with the same layout as mine exceeded.

I just got my letter too!

How many points does each home unit need?

Ah I guess if they have to splice and test then you don't really have a choice, doubt many of us have the appropriate equipment to crimp and test optical cabling.
Yeah 1 point for the modem should be sufficient, the rest is networking equipment you have to furnish yourself, like a gigabit router.

you can get them to coil the fiber and terminate on the box and test. the fiber termination jack can be removed from the box so you can pull the cable yourself and fix the box back wherever you want.

I think if you really really want to hide the cables, before the installation date, run a string through your false ceiling from your desired end point to somewhere near your front door. When they are here, just tell them to duct tape their cable to your string and pull from the other end. Should work.

Well mine is slated for between 01 Sep 2011 to 01 Nov 2011... long wait.![]()

Back to Killies... slowly.

-.-Y one of the last area...no news here. damn...I will end up same as bossteck...the false ceiling...

Mine already wired up very nicely done last October, but when the real thing going to be fully operational?

>"< Hmm...seem like 1 June this year letter will come. From what I gather so far:
1st 15m free
$33 for every 5m.
Dist. measured from door for home. Dist. measured from gate for landed.
Miss the initial letter charge is $220 for home and $450 for landed
Adviseable to be near to power source
Modification works can only be done by OpenNet authorised contractors.
Faulty cable means senting email to [email protected] (I thought your internet should be down at this point?)
Termination Box H125mm x W80mm x D20mm
Technical side:
Fibre can operate up to 40Gbps but currently they are going 1Gbps. They mentioned that we as residentials people are encourage to deploy 10/100mbps networking the house. Hey! That means 10/100 will be useless if you want higher speed or opt for wireless. Better hold your horses for the next generation of network equipments.
Network Cable Reference:
Cat 5e - max. 1 Gbps
Cat 6 - max. 10 Gbps
Cat 6a - max. 10 Gbps
Cat 7 - max. 10 Gbps

Got mine wired 2 days ago before I came upon this thread.
Mine's wired to the nearest room, and had 10m spare cable cut away. The wireman told me that there is no necessity to have it beside the TV. He said the website mentioned that because they don't want to have to explain that the unit need a power point, and it is assumed that saying "beside the TV" will surely provide the power point.
However, after he left I was wondering to myself whether having the modem at an obscure corner of the house, instead of the most central location, will truly affect the WiFi speed or not, especially when the room doors are shut. The wireman did tell me that it won't be a problem otherwise those 3-storey bungalows will all have coverage problems.
I observed the splicing of the cable. The glass fibre is fused together, which makes it not possible for us to do ourselves unless we have the equipment which look expensive. But like Choy suggested, it is indeed possible to pull the termination jack (carefully as they are on very thin cables) through your false ceiling yourself as the jacks are very tiny themselves.

It is possible to setup more than one wireless access point. Problem is between two wireless hub/switch/router, how long you would lay the cables. ugly or not ugly. pretty or sophisticated. High enough to transmit or low for obstruction.
Newer hdb flats would have the nearest power source from door as the storeroom cum bomb shelter but signal wise, not really a good place. So find the next available one and hopefully not in the kitchen. I had planned power sockets all round the living room with extra scv points and even invited the SCV to test signal strength for the extra points, include the ones in my rooms...meaning next time can change position of furniture without the need to lay cables. =) I guess I won't have too much of ugly cables/casing after all.

Cat 6 network cabling, rated for 1Gbps is going to be more than enough for the forseeable future. The backbone for local ISPs has been weak and fairly over subscribed since the dialup days.
Local loop bandwidth is essentially worthless, so even if they scale it to 40Gbps you will never need more than 1Gbps. Even HD broadcast over IP won't saturate 1000Gbps.
Gigabit routers are only now starting to become commonplace, and are still around the $150 - $200 mark.

Fuzzy,
One of our ISP is Grade A cable infra (charges higher). Another is Grade B cable infra (charges lower). I don't have to spell out if you are familiar with their services..heh.
You really think so? lol.
SGD $159 and above....for now. think again? patience. =)
