    Re: soil requirement

two layers will do fine. bottom layer you can put base fertilizers such as ada power sand, jbl aqua basis, sera floradepot, etc. the upper layer will be your gravel, fine sand, aqua soil, etc.

if you have already planned your aquascape, you will know how much substrate you require. e.g. if there are many slopes in your tank, you will need more substrate material. or you can improvise and add large flat rocks or empty egg cartons at the bottom layer to increase the height of the substrate.
    Yecch!

    Re: soil requirement

    1. Think about what you want to plant first.
    2. If you are looking for soil that stablise the water at certain ph level, rich in nutrients then Ada Aqua soil amazonia II is the one for you (without the fert. base), this is for low ph setup.
    3. If you are looking for fert. based setup, then Denerelle or Nature soil should suffice with JBL Fert. It should be some soil, fert base, then the soil again. This is more towards the old type of setup. Note that you still be dosing Plant Nutrients. In this setup, ph will be high according to your tap. This is for high ph setup.
    4. Another type of high ph setup is as of (3) but minus the fert. base. Nutrients are supplied via your manual dosing. Ada do have normal soil, malaya soil, etc.

You can drop yourself to BioTope (Marsiling), Aqua Star Trading (Yishun), Qianhu (near Sungei Gedong), C328 (Clementi) to see the range of soils available. Don't ask for recommendation at the shop before you decided what you want to plant, because the LFS owners will still ask you the same question

    Re: soil requirement

Actually, normal soil will do if you ask me. Cardinal can survive at higher ph range. Below PH6.4, its basically a killing range.

10-15kg should suffice. Depending on how deep you want your tank to be. Extra ones you can store in Cookie bottles or those CNY tibits plastic bottles. Put a plastic spoon in for skooping of soil. 15kg can form 4inch depth already. Take out your ruler and see it for yourself. 20kg if you want to form 5 inch depth.

    Re: soil requirement

    Hi,

Good to see you are going to start your planted tank.

As per my advise earlier, it really depends on what type of planted tank you intend to setup and the following points:

    1. Low or High Maintainenance?
    2. Budget?
    3. Type of plants which is link to Point 1
    4. Type of fishes?

If you want to see a partial ADA setup using the substrate / glassware / fertilizeration. You can pop by. (However facing a bit of alage problem due to work).

    Cheers

    Re: soil requirement

    Good day Bro,
Since the topic if base on Soil Requirement.

Pardon me for interepting, however me also keep in knowing the soil requirement too.

    Mod, please pardon me.

Now me intended for Low / Semi maintaince tank, meaning it's okay for me to apply organic carbon as I have already gotten a bottle of Seachem Excel 500ml.

Plant I intended to keep is Fissiden only on DW & BW only, long passion on this plant.

As for fishes I am looking at Cardinal Tetra XL size, also long passion due to the colour.

Tank size that I am working at is about 49 * 38 * 32 cm.

Apparently I have gotten 2 Kg of Gex, was thinking of mixing. Also may plan to re-purchase ADA soil too. So any advice...

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Please do not add any other substrate over your soil, you may not get the required results in this way

    Hi Thio,

I agreed with thio. Don't add anything over the ada substrate. =)

Kindly advice. if latter is workable?
Or I should work on Gex alone?
Does Gex soil suitable for Cardinal Tetra?

    Thanks in advance.

    Daniel,

    Watch on your IM Lingo.

If you haved used GenX soil then top up with the same one.

I personally don't advise people to mix soil.
