Second layer: Power Sand by ADA?? Shrimps, no-rooted and no-demanding plant do not need Power Sand. It can create more problem when the fert leak to the water column, all sort of algae will come.

Good Day Bros & Sis,
After some Theory Lesson from Bros/Sis (as per their knowledge and experience) and a few painful Practice lesson. I had start a New Shrimp Tank again:
The Specs of my Tank:
Tank: L45cm x B28cm x H40cm with 8mm Thick.
Light: 24W PL
Filter: Ehiem 2213
Chiller: HC100A set at 24degC.
Soils:
First layer: Old Sea Mud
Second layer: Power Sand (recommended by NA)
Third layer: GEX Soil (4kg x 2 Red pkt).
The Tank had set up for 4 days still in Cycling process.
As this Tank will be keep Shrimps (Mid Grade CRS), therfore the Plants will be Low Light and Low CO2 Demand - Moss and some Nana.
Will not go for High Light and Demand Plants, as basis on some Senior Bros and Sis in this Forum, and painful experience from the last Few Tank, it is not easy to maintain High Demand CO2 Plants and Shrimp in one Tank.
However, I present still injecting CO2 for the purposes to expedite the Grow of the Moss (US Fissiden).
Once the Cycling complete, I will remove the CO2 before introduce Shrimps. Hope this a a correct Step.
At present, the Tank Parameter:
PH: 6.4 (when CO2 Off)
PH: 6.0 (after CO2 On for 4 Hours)
KH: 2.0 (when CO2 Off)
KH: 1.0 (after 4 Hours of CO2 On)
GH: Tried but do not understand the Test Kit??
Ammonia: more than 8 ppm. Hope is normal during Cycling Process.
At present: I yet not do any Water Change, will do 20% tomorrow.
Appreciated Bros and Sis comments and advise.
HAPPY NEW YEAR.
Thks/rgds.

Noted. I don't think the Power Sand is from ADA, as it was contain by Normal Plastic Transparent bag (sealed). Recommended by NA.
Will much appreciated your good side give any Secondary Advise to prevent the Fdert Leak and Algae issues. If, is to teardown the Setting and re-do again, it will be a Big Job?
Appreciated your further enlighten.

powersand is from ADA.. just that NA often breakup the packs into smaller packs for those who does not need that much..
hi, i'm wondering where you get the moai head?
and by the way, becareful of your tank, i can see that there is nothing supporting two corners of the tank. it might give way sooner or later

It is just like in a cooking, you have added too much salt and now has to add in more water, do water change to change out the fert. But this is crazy, you are wasting your money. Or add some rooted plants and fast growing to absorb the fert, and may have to add in CO2 injection to make your plants grow well and fast but that was against your idea of setting up the tank of low maintainence, beside planted tank with CO2 is not really a good choice for someone who are first entering into shrimp keeping. Or you can lower the light duration and/or intensity to prevent the growth of algae, but then your water will be full of leaked fert after some time which shrimps dont need and dont WANT.
I have seen a friend's shrimp tank with moss which has added with powersand. After a month or so, the tank has turned into an unique aquascaping with a theme: Mystical Forest. Hair algae and greenish water has made the tank so unique.![]()

To: All
Had carried out 20% water change this morning and water test after 4 hours:
Ammonia: more than 8ppm
Nitrite: approx 5ppm.
Since I am not intend to put rooted plants and/or High Demand Plants, i should not lay Power Sand, at present, still struggling if should remove the Power sand and re-do again??

If you are really into shrimp keeping, get a tank for scaping and another tank just for simple shrimp tank. i'm doing so now cos i can't resist the tempation of aquascaping.
thanks for your imformation on where to get the moai heads![]()

To: All
had spent 2 hours to re-do the Tank yesterday afternoon before my Wife back home:
1) Remove the Water
2) Remove All Plants
3) Remove/Salvage the Top Layer Soils (GEX Soil)
4) Remove the Power Sand
1) Re-lay the Old Sea Mud.
2) Re-lay the Salvaged Gex Soils.
3) Top Up approx. 2 kg New GEx Soils.
40 Re-plants, fill water and re-start the Filter.
At this moment, no Parameter of water taken.
Thanks for All the support and advise.
Rgds.

To: Bros & Sis
Just carried out a Test, following the results:
Ammonia: 0
Nritite: 0
GH: 9dH
PH: approx 6.6
KH: 1dH
Nritates: Unknown (will purchase a test Kit tomorrow).
Total 10 working days Cycling theTank.
If the Nritates is within the limit, will change 50% water and purchase few Low Grade CRS to test the condition.
Appreciate further comments from Bro and Sis.

gh too high and kh too low
what's your objectives? for me is just the CRS itself. my tank is simple. only one driftwood with moss. my equipment setup same as yours, 1.5ft tank, HC100 chiller but low temp at 25 deg C. Just love to see the CRS in it. quite exciting when the first batch of CRS have babies, so small and difficult to spot them at first. good luck to your new tank, surely an interesting hobby.

To: Mr Jimmy
For this 1.5ft set up, I am only going for Mid Grade CRS, some low Demanding Plants (Moss and USF) as I do not think I am ready or good enough to go for Higher Grade. Not consider Fish.
Had do a 30% water change this morning. And carried out a Water test just nowand the Parameter as follow:
Ammonia: 0
NO2: 0
NO3: approx 20ppm
GH: 9 dH
KH: 2 dH
PH: approx 6.6
Temperature 25 Deg C (with Chiller)
I think I will do another water change maybe 30% again this Sunday. Will wait for another 4 to 5 days see if the GH will be improve.
As for the KH, appreciated Bro and Sis give some advise how to improve it.
Thks/rgds.

You need water change, or even use distilled water to bring the GH down. As for increasing KH, use sodium bicarbonate from any supermarket.

Good AM All,
had done a 40%water change yesterday morning. And the water parameterthis morning was:
Ammonia: 0
Nritites: 0
Nritrate: 40ppm (increased compare to few days ago).
PH: 6.7
GH: 8 dH (slightly reduce)
KH: 3 dH (improved)
i guess my Tank is still not fully Cycle as looking at the Nritrate increased +/- 20ppm and GH is still not stable.
I will wait for another 1 week and check again.
So far, I had dose Old Sea Mud (half a spoon) every water change. Since my GH is still high, will not dose any Mosura Mineral Plus or Bio Plus.
I had read some article that TDS (Total Dissolve Substance or Total Dissolve Solid) is factor which to take care off for CRS Keeping.
Appreciated, Seniors here give some advise of TDS and where can I get the Test Kit for TDS?
Your(s) kind attention is highly appreciated.
Thks/rgds.
