    Re: Oily water surface

Hi, oily water surface is usually attributed to overfeeding. I think there are mixed opinions if it affects your water quality. Some say that the oily surface can "block" and reduce the gas exchange. I have this problem myself, didn't use to have it til I introduced my cories and started feeding them. Which leads me to believe it could be a side effect of sinking food, like your shrimp pellets. (I feed my 6 cories 1 tablet a day)

An air stone will help agitate the surface of the water, and will assist in getting rid of it. Similarly when it gets too much for me I use a dry paper towel and just let it rest on top of the water for about a second. It helps absorb some of the oil, though it takes a few tries to get rid of most of it. Personally aside from aesthetics, I don't find the oily surface causing me any problems.

Not sure if it would affect the ph in any way unfortunately, hope this helped.
