1ft tank abit too small , you might want to get at least a 2ft tank for more stable water parameters.crs need temperature about 24-25 degree so a chiller is a must and therefore you need to buy a canister filter. If not you can try keeping c grades crs with a fan however your tank is too small so you will need to frequently top up the water. Need to buy ph,gh,ammonia,no2 and no3 testkits to measure the water parameters. As for soil, you can buy eithr gex red packet or ADA.

Yeah I would also recommend you seriously consider a 2 ft or larger tank, especially if this is your first attempt.

Be aware also that CRS do best at temperatures around 24C - 26C and with well oxygenated water, so a chiller or at the minimum fan cooling (which involves daily water topups) would make your first experience way less stressful (for yourself and for your shrimp)

Also using a soil substrate as bro CRS mentioned is the easiest way to maintain ideal pH parameters is quite important.

They are fairly sensitive shrimp, so you really want to make sure you have the time and the budget to do it right the first time around.

in that case you can go for a dolphin mini tem chiller since they are smaller in size and you can get a mini canister filter such as eden or boyu.

do you have a maximum budget?
    $200, $500, $1000+?

We can make better suggestions that way.

if you seriously wants to rear CRS, you need at least a 2 feet tank. tested and proven. i burned quite an amount when trying to rear CRS in a 1.5 feet tank. i'm now having a 3 feet tank and they are living happily in it. and by the way. my 3 feet tank is in my room. *hint hint*

if u use a chiller for a 1ft tank think will be a waste...try talk to ur parent for the permission to get a 2ft instead.. is just another 1ft size.

If can at least 1.5ft. Otherwise use a fan for 1ft tank and keep it simple inside the tank.

Re: Setting up a 1ft tank for CRS

Think important is to keep your tank temperature and water parameter stable.... if you are able to maintain that it should not be a very difficult job. Read those AQ expert on the major step that need to follow and of course start will lower grade CRS in my opinion. With a 1 feet tank probable a half of your budget should do the job if you go bargain hunting from some of teh forumer here.

1 feet might be a challenge. what about water temperature? how are you going to cool your water?

Re: Setting up a 1ft tank for CRS

With a $500 budget your chances of success with a 1ft are much higher.

Get an eheim canister that is around 500 - 600 L/hr flow rate, and try to get a 2nd Hand Hailea HC-100A or HC-150A, that will be a good starting point.

As for soil I'd recommend ADA Amazonia, or GEX Shrimp and Plant (Red bag), the small bag should be enough.

Also don't skimp on Test kits, at the minimum you want to have pH and Ammonia (GH/KH, Nitrite, Nitrate wouldn't hurt either)

You will have to be very disciplined with your water changes though, I recommend 10% - 20% per week for a 1ft tank.

This set a bro is selling is actually a very good CRS Setup: http://www.aquaticquotient.com/forum...295#post510295
Can just sell off the CO2 cylinders.

Re: Setting up a 1ft tank for CRS

1ft tank is possible. did it last time with just a 2211 filter and fan setup. breed like crazy. in fact before upgrading to 2211 canister filter, i was using a HOF. now into a 1.5ft tank. of coz with bigger tank like 2ft, easier to control the water parameters but i don't find difficulties in setting up the 1ft tank too. try out the lower grade one first. gain the experience and then you can move on from there. we always learn new stuff along the way, very interesting.
