    Hi anybody tried breeding shrimps?

I had juz setup a shrimp tank with wood, java moss, some unwanted plants floating abt and a sponge filter setup. No fishes. No lights. Juz natural sunlight. (At balcony)Mosse is growing fine.

Is this setup ok? I had juz introduced soem yamatos w eggs. Will they hatch? How long it will hatch? do I need to feed them?

Ya btw, can I mix different types of shrimps together? Will they fight or eat their young???Thanks.

I suggest you don't bother with breeding yamatoes, because there don't seem to be any varieties. Why not try breeding and hybridising cherry, tiger and bee? You could conduct experiments (but you will need a whole barrack) whether each of the main variants will breed true (i.e. the offsprings look the same as the parents) and if any crossbreeding will also retain the mixed features.

yamatoes will need water with high salinity to breed.

    lorba,
so If I dont put salt, wat will happen to the eggs that the yamatos is carrying? How much slt do I need? Will it carry till the right moment then it will release the eggs. Or the eggs will turn bad.

    Ivan,

You will be the first from this forum to have successfully breed yamatoes. Then you can tell us how to breed them .

kc, actually he isnt gonna be the first [] coz some members have actually bred yamato unknowingly.. they dun really require high salinity, just moderate... it is stated they yamato spawn in brackish water and returning to freshwater after the fry have grown to a certain stage

Simon, is that so? I have some young shrimps with brown spots on the side, was hoping they are going to grow into tigers rather than yamatoes (didn't think yamatoes could spawn in my tank, no salt, plus I didn't see them carrying eggs).

i remember having some really small ones that got eaten by my discus when i trimmed the plants, that was 1 yr back?
david had quite a few that grew big in his tank
imo the impt thing about breeding shrimp is to minimise the predators
if no one is eating them, and the water is good, and you have a lot of food (moss is great), there should be no problems with breeding shrimp
take a look at bioplast's left display tank if you have time
just look at the baby shrimp he has underneath the riccia and moss

I just went there, the baby shrimp is actually Yamato and he said that the success come from his blackwater extract. There's a customer in the shop who uses his bioplus black water extract, has also successfully breed the Yamatos, which spawn in his tank naturally.

I thought my Yamano shrimps actually breed in Freshwaters.
They have been holding the eggs for weeks already.

The blackwater extracts initiate breeding maybe true. As I have injected some amount - 5ml to test it out on my Corys sometime back on the 3ft tank.

Not sure should I inject more to keep the Yamano eggs or babies alive ? Or Do they need brackish water ?

Rainbows in my tank is a hungry hunter too ...

Hi all, my yamatos also breed in my planted tanks. Their best breeding ground is my X-mas moss wall.[]

have dense vegetation for the fries to hide in, moss wall and hairgrass appear to be excellent shrimp breeding ground.
