Holland Ram - Aquarium fish?

Anyone know what is the factor to look at when purchase this fish called
"Holland Ren" chinese name: "荷蘭鳳凰"?

Kee Hoe, I can't read Chinese but I think it's "Holland Ram" or Microgeophagus ramirezi.

Don't know what factors you're referring to but a pair will be real nice, wouldn't it? Also, there are too many color morphs and hybrids out there but whatever it is, I won't go for those 'long fins' or 'balloon' rams.

Pair cleaning the spawning site.

On guard... parental care at it's best.

Most LFS sells only males or if you're lucky, they might have missed and slipped in a female... so look reeeaaaal hard

guppies? definitely. as long as you intend to feed your guppies to the rams. hehehe...

rams will eat the baby guppies. and they might even go tail nipping.

yikes...then I have to let them have their own tank.

read in some articles about their pH being between 5 - 6 as optimum; how can I bring the pH level there? It now reads 7.2 after testing.

7.2 looks like tap water condition. Try using age water from other aquarium. Or try adding Aqumedi Black Water extract.

Hi,
I have a (netto) 10gallon/45liter tank with a still non bond ram pair in tap water with a "driftwood" making the water yellowish. When they have the mirror both looks well, attacks it, otherwise the male chases the female badly who looks quite pale, stressed. Would some guppies/platies help as ditherfish?

Yes they would help, or you can go with the divider method to separate the pair, condition them well and then re-introduce them together. This prevents the male from hurting the female too bad.

Thank you, I forgot the separation method. By the way I need something to separate without blocking the water because of the filtration. Any suggestion?

Wow..I didn't know that.

I read in some articles saying these rams are actually shy and can be kept as community fish.

My ram was fine with my guppies though i am not sure about the babies. but i do have some that manage to grow to the point they don't fit into the rams mouth any longer. My tank is heavily planted, that may have contributed to the fry's survival

Yeah..I think they do fine with peaceful fish like guppies. They will only be aggressive if they are breeding and protecting there eggs and fries.

But I'm pretty sure they will eat guppy fries since they are small and helpless.
