Umm... can this tank really survive without CO2? Seems to be alot of plants for a CO2 tank.
I'm pretty new too, so I was just wondering.
Never did planted tanks before. The last time I kept fishes was when water change means removing everything from tank and scrubbing the tank with Mama Lemon and then put everything back. So here goes my tank. I am sure will have many areas to improve so just shoot!
Tank size: 2x1x1.5
Plants: Java Ferns, Hairgrass (not sure what variety), Mini Pellia, Echinodorus Vesuvius, Vallisneria Spiralis, US Fissidens
Fauna: 5 neon tetra, 5 yamato shrimp, 5 dark skirt tetra, 2 guppy, 2 dario dario
Substrate: ADA Amazon Aquasoil
Lighting: 1x36W (11 hours)
Water Change: 10% every 2 days
CO2: none
First time startup...
A lot of plant casualties, not sure why. The flame moss rotted because I tied too thickly, the vallisneria spiralis also turned brown, the reddish plant also melted. A week later, did a rescape and changed the light from 15w to 36w. It has been more than a week since and no plant casualties. So far so good!
Little guy who took over the caves for shrimps...

2x1x1.5 with only 15W, no wonder your plants are dying. Its a good think that you change it to 36W.
With or without CO2 is depend on your lighting.

Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.

Looks not bad, but unfortunately, no co2, proper lighting or water change etc it can't really last.![]()

-.-
1. comscord. army strings...I am not good in tying, maybe you all can point it out better...
2. Light.
Very pretty guppy.![]()
Hmm... are you guys saying that the lighting is still too weak? Plants seems to be doing fine though.
Comscord - Bro, not comscord, never go Beach Road and buy comscord since Army days + comscord probably will be loose. It's just green string but ya... my tying cannot make it....![]()

Nevermind, uncle always got spelling problem. Tie the left over right, right over left method. If you are train in military you should know this and also know how to cut a comscord using bare hands.
Light we usually calculate wpg watt per gallon. You can use the calcualtor developed by Vinz (see Aquarium Calculator on top page) to help you to calculate.

Update, did a minor rescape. Decided to add Riccia to the foreground around 5 days ago. Also added Co2.
Still growing the Riccia... the left one was the original mesh that I bought. Plucked some out to grow on 3 other meshes.
Riccia seems to be growing... poking out already.
US Fissidens seems to be growing well too.
The Echindorous Vesuvius surprisingly is my fastest growing plant. From original 4 plantlets that I got from a forummer, it is now 10 separate plants and all growing very well. Too bad it is growing fairly tall, I should have put it behind the DW instead of in front.
Java Fern also propagating from the leaves.
Vallisneria Spiralis sending out runners also.
Neon Tetras seems happy enough!

What happen to the 2 tigers? Can see you added Gourami, got snail? and also added oto. >"< I think the previous 1 guppy setup is ingenious because 1 will stand out. 3 will make it look common.
The wire mesh, hope you have pounded the sides inwards, if not your scarlet and oto might take some injury, they can be very blur at times which is why makes them cute. Say, you have a bubble counter for your CO2?
Tigers still around but very small, cannot see. Had an ammonia spike 3-4 weeks ago when I was trying to feed the tigers frozen BW, Tubifex, FD Tubifex, etc. In the end, they settled for the same food as the tetras.Yamatos wiped out as a result of the spike.
Fauna a bit tricky because my wife and daughter likes guppies and "big fish" (i.e .gourami). So have to balance their needs. Can say the plants are mine and the fishes are theirs. Now its 4x guppies, 5xtetras, 1xguorami, 2xscarlet badis and 4xotos. Noted your advice on the wire mesh.
Have bubble counter but I can only do like 1 bubble every 3s. Any more it fizzles to the surface. Not sure if anyone has any advice to ensure more Co2 dissolves. Temperature is around 27-29 degrees C.
Also Riccia not pearling. Think because I do not have sufficient plant mass or temperature not low enough.

Wah...you feed me to tigers!..ha...If you are not keen on shrimps, you could increase the numbers of scarlet badis, I have 11 of them in my 2ft tank but not visible all the time because they tend to hide in the plants, driftwoods and the pockets of hidding places I created. But when they do appear, they will "light up" the tank. Gourami 1 is sufficient, too many will have negative effect.
CO2 try 1 bubble per second, after 3 days, increase to 2, after 1 week increase to 3 bubbles per second. Do it gradually, the fish will be trained to get use to it. Take special observation for your otos. If it cannot take it, keep it between 2-3 bubbles per second.
You currently have a dissolver but not a reactor. You can look and search under CO2 reactor in AQ/Google(use double quotes "CO2 Reactor"), this will provide you additional info. should you want to modify your setup. I think CNY you have plenty of time to use internet...hee assuming you are not "that busy" to bring your kid around to collect ang baos.

wow... your Vallisneria Spiralis is growing well.. i dont know why mine cannot grow as fast.. it's sorta like stunned growth...

stunned growth? what substrate/soil are you using?

Small Update...

If im not wrong vallinsnera prefer higher ph arnd 7-8.
Vallinsnera should be low requirement plant. But in my experience even with high light ,co2 and root tabs + fert dosing, vallinsnera did not grow well, tips always brown. My ph was 6.4.
Hope this helps
Back to topic about scape.
You should try making a full riccia foreground or change it to a full moss background and maybe cover the filter with some vallinsnera? Spiky moss foreground will look good with in you scape.
Try creating slope if u get the chance to create depth![]()
Cheers,
JJ
jiajuen900 - Thanks for feedback! Tearing down already so just trying to see how hard/easy Riccia is to grow that's why you do not see a full foreground. Anyway, I found that some of the food pieces fall into the Riccia and rot causing the Riccia around it to rot as well.
