Since when did we say Singapore slang not allowed? We say do not intentionally misspell words or use SMS or Chat short forms.

I know that 'u' and 'ur' is meant to save characters in the limited SMS length (which is not necessary on a forum) but I can never figure out why 'mi' is used in place of 'me'. It can't be the number of key presses. It takes 3 presses to get to 'i' and only '2 presses to get to 'e'. Besides, most if not all mobile phones have word prediction these days.

    Anyway, I digress. My bad!
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.

Re: What exactly is "my bad" ???

    BW, wrong lah.

"Garh garh torh. Long tio oo siah!"

If any non-chinese is following this thread...
Literal translation: "Daringly reverse. Hit something, there's sound."
Translated: Just reverse. If you hit something, you hear'll it.

Anyway, that ain't Singlish. That's unadulterated Hokkien (a Chinese dialect).

Re: What exactly is "my bad" ???

    I think should be:

"Lai ar Lai ar! Long dio wu sia!" (always used in the army reversing trailers, same translation as before. Except front part is come come!)
    "Oei! Mai luan luan gostan!"
    (oei, don't any-o-how reverse)

"Siam ar Siam ar, Xio Zhui"
(Move away Move away hot water coming through)

If I am not mistaken, it is "walau eh". Its use ranges from "wow", "golly", "crickey" to "what the sh*t".

    Used in context like:

We have a pot-luck do and your contribution is a packet of peanuts and I go "wah lau eh, like that asso can".

Its origin may be from "wa lau" used by Hokkiens to mean, "my father" or "my husband", a contraction of "wa ah lau", meaning my old (man). Very possibly because in swearing, use of close relatives is common, my/your father, mother to grandmother (no offence).

    1st portion correct lah.
    2nd portion wrong lah.

To most is crude language. To the people who uses it, it is just a way of life, nothing crude, it's like a normal language such as singlish. Hokkien used in Taiwan, is entirely different domain. =P

Singlish I think shouldn't call Singlish in the first place. It's just commonly share between MY and SG. You go and say "Alamak!" everyone knows what you saying (MY/SG).

It's "go astern" and not "go stern". The former means to move backwards and the latter would probably mean something like "to be stricter".

As for "long tiok ooh siah", a proper translation would be "audible on impact". I think Tyrone would approve of this phrase.

"wah lao" is supposed to be a euphemism/substitute for male genital, as in "wah lao eh LJ" meaning "my father's penis". this way it drops the direct genital reference and makes it sound almost polite.

a somewhat similar western counterpart would be "best bang for the buck", whereby "bang" is the slang term for copulation, in this case the phrase literally means "the best **** money can buy". however many ignorant users assume "bang" to mean the exploding sound/action, and some even writes it as "biggest bang for the buck".

I think you could be wrong, Choy. I googled "bang for your buck" and this is what I found:

A BIGGER BANG FOR THE BUCK - "A better value for one's money. This term dates from 1954, when it specifically meant more efficient use of defense appropriations, relying mainly on nuclear deterrents. The 'bang' here alludes to a nuclear explosion. It was U.S. Defense Secretary Charles E. Wilson who said this new policy would provide 'a bigger bang for the buck.' The phrase subsequently was applied to civilian issues involving a better value. It echoes an older advertising slogan for a carbonated soft drink, 'More bounce to the ounce.'" From "Fighting Words: From War, Rebellion, and other Combative Capers" by Christine Ammer (NTC Publishing Group, Chicago, Ill., 1989, 1999).

I suppose it's easy to associate the word "bang" with a "sexual act". After all, there is little doubt what we refer to when we say "gangbang".

But I know for a fact that the term "what the fish" (which is commonly used in the army) is actually a polite way of saying "what the ****"

So wah lao does refer to the speaker's father as LJ refers to the offending article. I would say wah lao is a contraction rather than a euphemism or substitute like when we say 'WHAT THE ..." and leaving out the S word or the F word (and I mean fish since this is a aquatic forum).

Re: What exactly is "my bad" ???

Ah lau - for moms to address to dad.
Ah lau - called by son address to dad.

Wa lau - means my...dad/hubby, tells people reference to my dad/hubby.
Nothing offensive about it. So long you don't suddenly add the LJ word in.
