Just saw a layer of oil or something that looks like oil under surface of water! I've got a 2ft low tech tank with a little bit of moss and driftwood only. The layer looks like it's covering the WHOLE surface of the tank.

I've turned on the aerator but is there anything I need to do? Anyone's input would really help, those who've encountered this before! Do I clean the tank again? Is it the water conditioner? Man...

Layer of oil.. If you think you didn't not drop in any oil/iron/metal/or some harmful into the tank that should be fine might be anything in the tank producing it, take a look!?.

I too have a lay of oil also, look ok to me guess need to do a few water change should be fine.

    Re: Help!!!

My 2ft also have a layer.
What I did was to move the water surface a bit move by directing the outflow from the filter at the surface. After a while, it will clear.

    Re: Help!!!

Hmmm...ok. Thanks for the suggestions. Doubt it's due to anything in the tank as I haven't done anything apart from removing the moss for a trim and retie but put it back today. Will monitor further, I guess.

    Thanks again!

    Re: Help!!!

You could try skimming it off, or soaking it up with a sheet of paper towel also.

    Re: Help!!!

Paper towel..lol why I never think of that.

My 3ft used to have this layer of oil from the plant. After 3 weeks, I use a mug, press it gently down the water water surface to take water and the oil to remove the layer leaving some behind. The fish won't choke. It is not because you drop a can oil into the fish tank, so don't worry about it. The fish can cope.

Current 2 ft does more regular water change so always do not have the oil layer issue. It is still new consider it to be 2 mths. old, hence can't say it won't built up as time ages.

    Re: Help!!!

it is normal to have the surface film in planted tanks.
to get rid of it you can'
    a) use a surface skimmer
    b) introduce a little surface agitation by adjusting your filter outlet
    c) use a paper towel (as suggested by others)
    d) introduce molly or platy; these fishes seems to eat the scum

    Re: Help!!!

Can use a sheet of newspaper, then lay it on the surface. After a while when the paper is soaked with water quickly take it out of water. Do this many times and you can get rid of the oil!
