    Re: Ivanacara adoketa

I guess aggression occurs at night, or the pencilfishes are doing the killing themselves. In small groups, a vicious series of events will take place, and usually the weakest are killed off. I don't know why pencilfish do this, but only in small groups.

i don't think Adoketa is the culprit. i had rear them several occasions with so many different tetras of all kinds....beside chasing around on their own kind, they almost leave the rest - tetra or apisto alone.

    Re: Ivanacara adoketa

If the adoketa are not known to kill other fish, then it is the pencilfish fighting amongst themselves. ggMing, I see an Oto in your tank, was it killed? If it's still alive then it's the pencilfish doing the killings.

Sean (JL23) adoketa must be in breeding mode & at breeding size (7~10cm).
Surely, when in breeding mode, most dwarf cichlids, not only adoketa are capable to kill small fishes that they felt as a threat.
Do note that adoketa is one of the largest size dwarf cichlid, that means that most of the growing time until they become breeding mode <7~13cm. They are actually non aggressive towards tank mates. (They rather like to chase after one another if you have a group, instead of other fishes)

As compare to apisto, i will say apisto is more territorial than adoketa. We don't actually see adoketa pecking / trying to bite at tankmates most of the time as compare to apisto do. (They like to chase their own kind)

Wow, apart from the fish.... the scape is beautiful!!!

A thing i hate about adoketas. The male and female are so difficult to sex!!! Remembered sitting infront of a tank of 10 or more pieces of mixed genders. Looking out for the females within the group was quite a pain.

would really appreciate some tips on the differentiation of sexes. And does anyone has any pics of the black adoketa? did some research and found that black is actually the rarer than red.

    Re: Ivanacara adoketa

hi guys, i read some articles from US saying that there is only one type of adoketa. the color differences mainly due to the water condition. what i mean is if you breed them in black water then they tend to be in red color and normal tank water will be black color. i bought 6 adoketa from ggming few months ago and now 1 out of 5 showing black color form while others remains red color form.
