Dear all, need your help with a newbie question. I turn on the lights for my aquarium from 8pm - 7am. Reason for that is that I want to appreciate the tank at night as well as to have some ambient lighting when I wake up to visit the loo at night.

Is this ok for the fishes or should I turn on the lights at more "normal" hours such as 8am - 8pm? In the day, the tank does not have any direct sunlight but is probably around 20% lit vs full sunlight. Will it impact my fish "sleeping"?

Day or night doens't really matter. In our hobby, of course we would want to appreciate our tanks when we are around, so most would opt for evenings and nights. There are some who break up the lighting hours to have 2 seperate periods in a day.
So it's up to you eventually

Good to hear... so at night should be fine then. Interesting that xaine you mentioned about 2 separate periods in the day, according to Dennerle website, that is highly recommended.

While the lighting is on, the plants’ metabolism is in full swing. Light means “work” for plants. Consequently, they are grateful for a “midday break”. This gives them an opportunity to recuperate and to break down harmful metabolic products.

The following lighting rhythm has proven effective:
    • 4-5 hours of light in the morning
    • Then a break of 2-4 hours without light
    • Followed by 5 to 7 hours of light

I think it really depends on yourself.

But I find that 7pm - 3am should be pretty ok.

Too much lighting will encourage algae growth.

    I set my timer from

    7am to 11.30am
(So that I get take a look at my tank before I leave for work.)

    7pm to 11pm
(I can appreciate the plants, fishes and shrimps after a day of hard work.)

Not sure that fish will "sleep". Light more for plant.

After a long time the fish will get use to the bright lighting, so no need worry

    1. Breakup of lights settings. Not adviseable. It is better for the plants to have 8-10hrs of continous light.

    2. Breakup of lights, technically yes, you have another timer and another light which might not be a tank light, it can just be an USB Adaptor with a USB light connected to the timer.

Yes, you do disturb the fish sleep. They be stressed if too much light. If i am the fish, I will jump to my death the next morning because my master do not allow me to sleep properly...lol

If your pocket is deep enough or you can save. Look at this link:

I am following this program from dennerle and so far has been working well for me, this "break" called the "siesta" technically, is designed to keep algae at bay and its working for me so far.
