The male is showing a lot of potential.
Keep him in a low ph tank and his dorsal will grow longer..

As the female, its kinda of short in term of body length.

One of the apistos I'll aim to get in the future. Good effort in getting it!

Now trying to push pH lower by using ADA Africana + Ketapang leaf. Hope they'll start to grow long long extensions on their dorsal

Very bold and daring fish. Will always 'pose' near the front glass.

Nice both the male and female! I love the colors on the female too! My female was even broader then yours. Thought it was a sneaker until she bred...

I bred them at pH 4.5 using ADA africana with peat. But pH below 5 is not for the faint hearted especially if the fish cost alot... most of the other fishes/dither i threw into the same tank died within minutes from acid burns...

Must it be such low pH for them to breed? I never practice taking pH readings, I'll usually just dump everything into the tank (Ketapang, peat, soil), and hope for the best

    Re: Apistogramma sp. Jurua

I have tanks with different pH from 6.5, 5 and 4.5 and i use the battery operated american inc pH probe to test my water. This is much more accurate then those paper products which are also not economical in the long run.

Previously, they were in the pH 6.5 tank and did not breed. When i shifted them to the 4.5pH water they bred. So i suppose lower pH does help for this specie. However, i'm pretty sure someone else would have been able to breed them at higher pH because 4.5 may be a tad too low... like i say, you risk losing your fishes to acid burns.

Does slowly reducing the pH helps to prevent the fish from acid burn?
Once they slowly adapt the water should be ok..

I drop the pH slowly to be on the safe side with varying amount of sera peat.

Go for pH 5 to 5.5 which is easily achievable using ADA africana. Have not tried ADA Malayan but heard they could go lower then 5.5.

i think just going to leave the tank as it is. They seem pretty happy with it. So from now onwards, it's just wait...and wait....and wait...

Sometimes a lot of waiting turn you off...
Better be hardworking a bit and get faster results.
    You're feeding them live foods?
Maybe you could try getting them adult brine shrimps to condition them before breeding take place.
I got amazing response feeding bs to my fishes..

    Re: Apistogramma sp. Jurua

Hardworking or not, it's up to the fishes right? I feed them all types, daphnia, BBS, sera granu green, NLS thera A+, Tropical spirulina flakes, Tropical granules, and a few 'no brand' pellets... They'll eat anythign i throw in.

No supply of BS here in Kuala Lumpur. Sad.

    Re: Apistogramma sp. Jurua

Hatch BBS eggs and grow them up yourself. Pretty easy if you follow the instructions on the Internet. Growing them from BBS to adult take a while and need a much bigger tank and marine salt to keep them alive. Regular water changes and filtration are a must, along with aeration.

By the way, you can gut-load the Daphnia before feeding. Just give them green water to feed on for a few hours before you feed the Daphnia to the apistos. Gives them more nutritional value.
