    erm,
if its me and i got to leave for like 6-7 months, i will either throw some moss which i wants in, add some feeder fish, water has to filled to the rim.
another way is to wash clean the soil and sell to some other hobbist. next time come back and use again.
i can buy from you at low price

    Re: Advice

You can leave the water half/fully filled up in the tank and put one fighting fish inside. As compared to feeder fish which may die, they're very hardy fishes so should have no problems with you being away for so long, just need someone to feed it once a while.

Btw won't the soil smell if it's left moist for so long especially since it's been used before and there will be fish waste in there? I remember many yrs back, i decomissioned a tank with lapis sand without clearing out the moist/wet sand due to laziness and after a few mths when i decided to clear out the sand, the sand STINKS!!

wonder if you can cover with cling film after filling till just above substrate, put the tank at the balcony to get sun, and then plant HC or smth. or moss.

Instant HC lawn when you're back!

Not advisable cos the heat from the sun will spoil the silicon especially when the tank is not fully filled with water.

No need sun, light will do. but 6 months probably 2 long. Within 2-3 month the whole substrate should be covered with HC

    btw, going for exchange?

anyway I think can put like a ton of moss, no filtration and a few guppies/one fighting fish for the mosquitoes. Got a neighbour who got such a similar setup in a big ceramic pot and no maintenance for mths

yup... going for exchange.. anyway.. i was thinking.. maybe i could use the cling wrap and put it as close to the soil as possible.. hopefully there aren't any harmful chemicals for the fish on the cling wrap.. coz i was thinking.. if i were to leave it as close to the soil, growth of anything would be minimize.. coz depletion of air would be sooner or later.. esp if i were to cover it with a big towel..

How big is your tank. If it is a small tank why don't you clean up everything. You can always pack your soil into plastic bags. Seal the tank well with material that don't deteriorate after 6 months. If you tank is not place in a total darkness spot, coverup the glass surface as well.
