Plants don't need a particular pH...What they want is just CO2, micros and macros.

You are right. But we can't deny that Tonina sp prefer to lower pH and kH than other plants.IMO, growing and thriving are two different things.

    Dear PeterGwee,
Have you tried ADA soil before? [:]

    hi alfra,

can i find out from u how is the ADA soil sold ? as in the type of packing n the price of it ? and where can i get it ?

next question is, how do i apply it to my present tank ? could i just lay it in on top of my present base fert n sand ? or do i have to dig up a particular area, put the ADA soil..n cover back with sand ? =)

    thanks..

    J.J,

9 Litres bag (Amazonia, Africana and Malayan, standard type)from S$45 to S$48 at Keong Seong (tbr, the current importer and distributor of ADA products),Polyart(Clementi), Choong Sua (Bkt Timah), Teo plant farm (LCK), Ben (tbr)........

Some of us use the aquasoil as the only substrate and without base-fert, some pp lay it on the top of base fert, some pp put it in a small container, some pp mix it with their gravel........it is all depend on your personal preference.

However i still suggest you to do rescape, i.e start all over again with Aquasoil on base fert.

Anyway, if you really unwilling to mess up your current layout, you can try to put base fert and aquasoil in a few small containers and insert them into the substrate.

p/s: For Amazonia aquasoil , although the pH value will drop to approx 5.5 at the initial stage, it will go up to approx 6.5 eventually after a few time of weekly WC. So please don't worry too much on your pH after using the aquasoil.

    Hope it helps

Just a note..if you use aquasoil, you can no longer use the pH/KH relationship to find your CO2 level as the peat effect will affect the KH and pH reading.

If I had a nickle for every time I've heard a plant "needs" low pH and KH to thrive over the years, I'd be a rich man.

While I don't deny there are exceptions, I've only seen one that _might_ fall into this catagory out of about 250-300species of aquatic macrophytes I've kept over the years. Gloss certainly does quite fine at higher KH's/pH's/GH's. I can generalize with a good deal of cofidience but until I try the plant and torture it with some hard water, I cannot say. Tonia is not available here in the USA. Pellia is making the rounds as are a few other plants. But I've always been extremely skeptical when anyone says a plant needs a certain pH or likes soft water. 1 in 250 chance is pretty poor odds and even that's a maybe. Maybe some Canadians have some. I'll try that way.

    Regards,
    Tom Barr
