Read that for marine po4 and no2 are the 2 elements constantly monitored. With po4 kept at 0 with phosban brown algae was no longer an issue.

it is different in freshwater, lower PO4 was reported cause green spot algae. Regardless how true it is, I dose KH2PO4 around 3 to 4 time the recommended dosage. I have been doing that for years without algae problem.

    I dose 5ppm of PO4 and 15ppm of NO3 3 x a week:

    ADA AS etc

    Where's my algae?
I've been waiting 20 years for my algae based on the PO4 ppm claims, where is it?

    Tell me, I wanna know
    Anyone?

    Here's another tank, same thing:

    and another:

Here's one going back 8 years ago:

    Where's my algae?
Why do I need to test PO4?

I add plenty and the plants respond extremely well.

They recommend checking because they sell and see a market for test kits to expand sales/business, not because you need them.

If they or anyone wishes to sell a test kit that's of any real use, they should supply a reference solution to compare a known against the test kit method.'
Cost more, but then the test is at least done correctly and not just a mere guess.

Otherwise you are not any better off that not testing
