WPG does not scale well for very small tank or very big tank.
Hi Thomas,
Thanks for the clarification.
Hi Shadow,
I have placed order for a 6x2x2 tank and am planning for a non CO2 low light low tech tank.
Can you advise if the WPG rule will work for my tank. If not, how much wattage should I be looking at and how many hours of light per day ?
Thanks much for your advice in advance.
6x2x2ft, that huge. Never try this kind of size before, so I can't really give you any advice especially when you want it to be non CO2.
Hi Robert,
I found this link recommending lumens/square inch and then from there determine how much wattage is required. The one problem is that it does not have a table for T5s.
http://woo.gotdns.com/Aquarium/Lighting.htm
It does recommend about 117W for T8 for low light.
I'd like your comments. Do you think i can also reference about 117w for T5s for low light?
I had a 6x2x2. 2WPG was more or less highlight for the taller plants. For a non CO2 low light low tech tank, I would suggest 1.5 to 1 WPG... though at 1WPG, the short plants will have to be the really shade loving plants like Anubias. 12 hours per day of light will do.
I would still suggest adding carbon either in the form of CO2 or a liquid supplement like Seachem Excel or the one from Profito or other equivalent. It does make a difference in my opinion. Be careful if you are injecting CO2... don't over do it and a solenoid is a really good idea. Personally, I'll just go with the liquid supplement, as there is no worry of CO2 poisoning and it's harder to overdose.
For such a large tank at low tech, circulation is important to make sure there are no stagnant areas where algae will usually thrive.
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.
Tom Barr has a 6ft setup which is also 2WPG which you can use that as a guideline. With CO2 of course.

so without CO2 should be lower then, maybe 1 WPG?
