Never test for amonia but I did test for NO3, it is around 5ppm at my place
Hi,
Out of curiosity, I tested the tap water for Ammonia using the test kit from API. To my surprise, the reading indicated that my tap water contains Ammonia in the region of 0.50ppm!!! I thought tap water shouldn't contain any Ammonia at all!
Is it true that our tap water in Singapore contains Ammonia or is my Test Kit having problem. I followed the instructions strictly as indicated. I also tested the tap water twice and both times the same results.
Experienced brothers, please enlighten me on whether this is true. Thanks.

Thanks......OMG! Couldn't believe that NO3 present in PUB water. Thought we have one of the best quality of water in the world!!!! Maybe you should test for Ammonia too.
Other experienced brothers seeing this too?
Hi,
Just to update, went to PUB website and confirmed that Ammonia is added to PUB water for treatment:
"Aluminium sulphate is the main coagulant. In most cases, hydrated lime is also added to adjust the pH of the raw water for the best flocculation results. Polyelectrolyte is used as a coagulant aid. For disinfection, chlorine is used to destroy the bacteria and viruses. Ozone is used, as well as chlorine, at Choa Chu Kang and Bedok Waterworks. Ammonia is added in the treated water containing free chlorine to form a stable chlorine residual. Activated carbon is also used to remove any bad taste and odour."

If you get a good anti-chlorine/chloramine treatment, you have nothing to worry about. Chloramine is chlorine combined with ammonia (in line with the post above by hzeong). A good anti-chlorine/chloramine treatment will break up the ammonia and chlorine, then treat both the ammonia and chlorine to make them harmless.
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.
Hi Vinz,
Thanks for the sharing.
What do you mean by "good anti-chlorine/chloramine treatment" - does it mean good quality AC or do you mean the process?
If you mean a good AC product, could you kindly share which brands are more effective. And also if you mean the process, please share the method as well. Thanks....
See this page for details on what is found in our tap water:

I think most people would recommend the use of Seachem Prime to handle the chlorine and chloramine, but there are other brands that should perform just as well.
