They are both from different complexes. Paucisquamis is from the bitaeniata complex while mendezi is from the agassizii complex. They are easily recognizable by their tail fins.

oh ok thanks.. i just want to confirm that what i have is definitely a pausciquamis.
as i just managed to spawn them. around 30 fries. the mom just brought them out for a walk around the tank
This is a A. paucisquamis. If you bred them, congrats!!! You may be the first person to successfully hatched the eggs! Both these species are not easy to breed.
This is A. mendezi.

I would remove the male. Keep the female with the brood till they are afew weeks old before keeping them in their own grow up tank. And a tip on removing the male. Do it afew hours after lights off or very early in the morning before the lights are on. And use a torchlight. Because during this time, the female would have gone back to her cave with the fries. Male will be hiding at his favourite corner of the tank sleeping. This is the best chance to net the male without spooking the female and also, the sleeping/stunned male is much easier to catch.
Female will definitely peep out from her cave to see what's going on in the tank withbyour net causing some water disturbance. If the female appears, stop swishing your net in the tank, try again the next night. The males are really clever b#%tards. The moment your first attempt fails. They will be hiding away forever in corners your net cannot reach.

Congrats bro![]()
-clint- ~apisto keepers unite!~
haha i usually got tricks to bluff the male as well as the female out. currently i dun have a spare tank so will be leaving the parents together with the fries. ONCE i see any aggression, i will definitely remove the parents into my rams tank.
Maybe i can just share on the steps which i take to remove the parents. as my tank is a simple set up, or rather it is a spawning tank, thus the only furniture in the tank is 1 piece of Driftwood.(DW)
so i will remove the DW first. then once i see the male is away from the female, i will place a mirror there to agitate him. once he is too engross in the flaring, woosh, there goes my net and get him out. same trick for the female too!
Congrats, Sen Jie!
Latest update, daddy have been removed this morning into a temporary tank.
Mommy have been a great mother, bring the fries out for a morning walk again.
Will provide first bbs feeds this evening when i reach home
Congrats Sen Jie! Awesome achievement.

Fed the spawn with freshly hatch BBS yesterday night. they seems to be feeding well!
