You will stunt the fish...yes in theory the fish will not grow in small tank but some species of fishes still grow regardless of how much tank space you give it...eg...Red tail catfish..
why in the first place you wanna stunt the fish...wouldn't it be nice to see it grow to full size..![]()

Then you must look at dietary requirements of the fish in question, and their growth rates in captivity. Some species grow very slowly at different temperatures or due to the longevity of their species in nature, or they just require some specific food item to grow well in captivity. Each species has their own quirks. You just have to do more research on the Internet or in guidebooks.
