if im not wrong, the number of fans wont affect the temperature that much. instead it increases the evaporation rate..
hi all. tearing one of my 1.5ft due to leakage . intending to do up a 2ft tank. thinking of low tech though. how many fans should i use to cool the tank? considering the weather these few days is inexpected... the tank is only going to be full of moss and ferns.

1 fan lower by 3 -4 degrees but 2 fans wont mean lower by 6-8 degrees. Evaporation is what removes the heat. More fans increases evaportaion rate but not the temp. I think this is what magnugget meant

be it 1 fan or more..you temp in tank should range between 28-26 degrees..depanding on your ambience temp.More fan will not get you any lower than that except during colder mths of the year.
it is highly dependent on tank surrounding temperature. Fan at best can reduce by 3 degree C, the number of fan does not really matter once you reach 3 degree drop. It may take 24 hours before you can get these 3 degree drop.
Let say I already have 2 fans and it only cool down by 0.5 to 1.5 degC below ambient temperature at most. By addding more fans, will the water temperature drop further ?
whats the temp? if the ambient temp is around 26 to 27 i dont think it will drop much further
Cheers,
JJ
thanks for the input people. okay if 1 fan can reduce the temp by max 2-3C, what brand is good enough?? my ambient tank temperature is about 28-28.5C without the fan

evaporative cooling using fans is dependent on ambient air temperature and humidity levels. lower humidity allows greater cooling effect. unfortunately, it is rather humid here. so around 26~28 degrees is what you can expect to achieve.
using more fans allows you to run each fan at a lower speed thus lower noise. a single high speed fan may do the job but it will be noisy and cause ripples on the water surface.

thanks for the input boss. i posted this thread because i saw a set which contains 4 fans, hence wants to know if it really got any benefits. cheers. Coincidentally, does anyone know if a 2 footer is stable enough in terms of temperature fluctuation? i know that smaller tanks do have problem in maintaining the temperatures..

Try this.
Cans (tm) Cooling Fan 3000. I bought this at Clementi Flourist. I will pm you the price. Good thing 1 is enough. But do note that having Fan means you have slight noise pollution. Dymax is quieter, performance wise...umm..I will still stick to Cans Cooling Fan.
Dymax windy w-7, too quiet.. i can hear myself... lol.. i mean the water...

Wil, you can hear water, means time for you to top up your water...lol. If you hear water sound caused by fishes, it means you forget to feed the fish and the fish are reminding and calling to you. =)
I think I feed too much liao.. lol..

Okay...get some rest this week, hell of a week. I need some body maintenance as well. Diaz will be checking out the fan over the weekend, I pm him already.
Your place have air-con?
how big is the fan?
is using the laptop cooler fan another solution?
