    Hi,
I was told that it will save some cost by not adding salt until the water is ready for live stock during cycling of water. In this way, cost can be reduce should the water cycling fail for one reason or the other.

    What do u advise.

WRONG!!!... tank failures are usually the act of the hobbyist who are impatient in waiting for the tank to stablise before stocking up. cycling without salt only makes the tank a freshwater system.. saltwater bacteria is different from those in freshwater... pls dun make that mistake.

    Goondu,
perhaps i should make myself clearer.. when the tank is not fully matured, and the hobbyist starts to dump in livestock, he/she is only hasten the demise of the beautiful creatures. this is because, when new livestock is introduced, ammonia level rises, and before the system had time to break down the ammonia to nitrite and nitrates or even had the type of bacteria to do so, the ammonia level will continue to rise and becomes toxic to the livestock. and usually, beginners tends to be anxious (speaking from experience) and dump alot more stuff than what the system can support, causing a rapid "system failure".

    marine beginner,
i dun know how to advice on what to avoid unless u let me know what u are unsure abt.. perhaps, like i mentioned eariler, perhaps u can take a look at the aquatic FAQ for the threads that i have post up on marine setup.. after that, any queries, i or spiff will be more than glad to help u out..[]
