Too many fishes usually equal too much waste, which equals too much ammonia produced. Which usually leads to lots of algae, which then out compete the plants for nutrition, or they grow on the leaves and block the plants from photosynthesis.

Also when given lots of nitrogen (from ammonia/nitrite/nitrate from waste), plants needs lots of the other nutrients to grow well, and more often then not, the hobbyist follows general fertilisation guidelines and fail (or does not know how) to compensate accordingly.

More of side effects of too many fishes causing poor plant growth, then any direct effect.

I would also say a planted tank with too many fishes is usually harder to manage and usually badly managed.

Every water body under its set condition has a fixed total bio-mass. When the bio-mass is exceeded you have death of some of its components - that may be fish or plant or mixture of both.

Trimming, cleaning (the micro-organism in the muck is part of the bio-mass) and keeping everything within the maximum bio-mass of your tank is good management anything else is bad management.

As far as the bio-mass is concerned - it could be fish heavy, plant heavy, or balanced. It does not matter, as the rest is only MYTH.

You're right. So my 'too many fishes' is with reference to the balance within the tank.

Different fish species will do differently as well, but generally the more fish, the better the plant growth. Adding in too many fishes all at once will shock the system before plant growth can compensate for the increase, therefore allowing ammonia to remain in the system and poison the fish.
