    Hi sky.
Ok, first off, are there any fish/inverts in your tank? how big is it? is it cycled? how long has it been running? do you have any other live rock in there at the moment?
Ok, onto the live rock itself.
You can buy cured or uncured live rock. uncured live rock is very raw. eggy smelling. this has all the rotting things on it, dead corals etc, things like that. A lot of people using uncured LR to cycle their tank with.
Cured LR is LR that has been in a tank for quite a while, usually have quite a lot of nice growth, and is not rotting. This will smell like the sea - not eggy like uncured LR.
    Hope that helps.

sky, i reccomend you take a look at this thread.
Take a look at the marine FAQ and then ask any additional questions.
    Cheers!

    Non-cured.
Please note that most of the corals will not survive the cycle.

I noted that there are some green stuff on LR in some LFS I went. Looks like some kind of fern or small plants. Are they harmful to the corals? is it good to have them around.

i dun know what u talking abt.. it might be macro algae.. if so, yes good to have but ppl placed them in refugium to reduce the nitrates.. not in the main tank.. unless u are having a lagoon system..

    Hi,

So when a LR is consider dead? Is it true that it will turn white? Currently, I'm trying to cycle my tank with cheap LR($6/kg).
I notice that the NO2 and NO3 raises rapidly. What do I do now?

    Please advise.

when the LR turns mouldy and if u take it out, it is vey smelly, like rotten eggs.. when cycling the tank, NO3 rises rapidly?? u mean NH3 and NO2.. if so, that is natural.. while cycling the tank, i recommend that u get a book and read up on the marine tank setup or try to learn abt the nitrogen cycle.. during this period, try not to add any more livestock.
