    Questions from a newbie

Hi there, have had aquariums for a long time...stopped for a while but am getting back into them. Noticed that shrimps are really cute and was thinking I may add a few. But before I do, I have a couple of questions.

    1. I have a newish tank with a huge driftwood in it that leeches tanins. Basically, the tank is pretty yellow. I used to have the same driftwood in my old tank and it turned the water yellow for more than 2 years. It sat dry for the past year but now is still leeching tanins. Is this ok for shrimps?

    2. What kind of shrimp would do well in that environment and survive without a chiller? I really don't want to buy another one, sold my old chillers long time ago. Just want to keep it simple this time.

    Thanks.

welcome back into the aquatic scene.
if you are able to place your tank at a shady and cool area in your home, it's possible to have some lower grades CRS in your tank.

welcome back to the shrimp club, poison poison!

Yes low grade CRS is able to go without Chiller.... If not sakura or Fire Red should also be good.

You mean lower grade CRS more hardy than higher grades?

If you don't intend to spend a lot of money, or to possibly get a chiller in the future, I would advise just to avoid CRS. Cherry, Sakura etc would be a better bet.

I have a small 1 ft tank w sakuras n shrimplets + 1 yamato, no chiller only fissiden and anubias petite. My room is super hot sometimes, but they are doing fine. So if you r thinking sakuras, i'd say you're safe.

Thanks to everyone who's responded! I think I will try out a few Sakuras or crystals when my tank is fully cycled. It's in the balcony and doesn't get any full sun so that area stays relatively cool all day, all year round.

    Thanks so much again!! Cheers!!

    1. boil your driftwood.. doesn't matter if you've had it for awhile, it will still leech tannins.

    2. you didn't mention what kind of environment the tank is placed in, so hard to advise if you need a chiller. what is your water temperature?

I suggest why don't you try out Sulawesi Shrimps instead this time? They are very beautiful as well. Please note that do not put soil into your tank if you want to rear them. They need higher PH of around 8 and room temp of 29-30 degree would be good for them so no need to put any fan as well. Try to put some coral chip to raise the PH and also use air pump to provide oxgenate the water better.

That's a nice idea. I've seen some pictures of them and they're pretty. I should think about this a bit cause they are quite expensive for inedible shrimp. (just kidding) But this is a good thought.

You can use OHFs with any size tank, but many of us use canister filters, especially if you want to maintain higher water quality, or you have a higher bioload.
