Recently did an impulsive buy of some blue discus and converted my available tank overnight to welcome these beauties the following day

Look rather messy though... all the plants are excess that I took from my community tank as well as existing that are from the old setup. Initially the fishes hovers near the surface which I suspected oxygen shortage. After introducing a dolphin HOF to work together with the boyu ef-05 canister, no more such problem.

    Comment and advice are welcome.

best is too have juvinile discus in bar bottom tanks. Only Medium size or Adult discus should be kept in planted tanks. Also adults require about 40L per discus.

Sadly yes... Or you could get a larger tank. These fish can be really fun to keep

Re: My messy discus tank setup

hmmm... never kept discus, but from what i know and heard they have even more unique characterisitcs than oscars etc. Maybe its stressed or there may be problems with water perimeter.

But never kept before. Wanted to keep, did my research but never went through with plan

So not most suited to comment.........
    Cheers,
    JJ

Re: My messy discus tank setup

Discus are beautiful and interesting fishes. Once they get accustomed to the environment, you can even "hand" feed them. They will not shy away from the frozen bloodworn held in my fingers.

They seem to know the feeding time and will lined-up near the front at the specific time (I feed them in the morning and evening).

Would be nice if I can chance upon a pair in this group to experience the breeding process; at the moment seems unlikely...

It's different from the apisto that I'm keeping at the moment and a I enjoyed keeping both types.
