    heh guys,
what do you all think of the new LED lights for aquarium.
seems like they are energy conserving, very bright but only think hot.
is it value for money since our electricity bills seem going up and up.
    thanks.

It's a much more attractive proposition if you're handy and want to DIY it, buying ready made LED systems is still way too expensive IMHO.

Problem is you will need to spend some time and money experimenting with the types and configurations as well as colour spectrums of LEDs to find what works best for your plant growth.

If you search the DIY section you'll see a few projects some members have done in the past.

I included some observations I made while making my LED light in this post, which you might find useful:

The initial investment is definitely costlier, but in the long run might save you money, as there is not much need to replace the tubes/bulbs and uses less electricity.

    that's what i figured.
before i could promote myself to T5, here comes this LED.
If input from experienced people here is good, might as well jump the gun and go straight to the LED.

From what i heard from my electrician colleague, it is pretty easy to fit, cos it has an inbuilt ballast , almost plug and play.
Might even extend it to my house use if they have the non "power LED" LIGHTS available.

wonder how long is the LED light lifespan sold by Nature. The low heat is an attractive incentive.

Re: Led lights vs FL or PL

That could be a 1w per led light.

is it going to be bright enough for a 3x1x1.5 tank? At Nature, from the look of it, the LED seems pretty bright.

Re: Led lights vs FL or PL

    Hi,

How would one know if the LED lights can support plant growth?

I am currently using a Dymax Robot 28LED as a night light when the T5 if switched off...

THe packaging on the dymax did not specify the spectrum etc. but it does not claim to work for plants...

I just concern that keeping the dymax on will cause algae or something but i am doing so in order that my kids won't bump into my tank at night while going to the restroom.

Re: Led lights vs FL or PL

I would go for the 3w per led version. Sometimes brightness doesn't means it would grow plants.
