Sounds like Light deficiency to me mate. Without seeing any parameters or pics that is.
What speicies are the stems and some water conditions may help others help you.
My non co2 tank is 1 month old. A few days back I noticed the bottom half of the stem of my stem plants are turning brown. This browning had sort of progressively spread to some of the other plants. I have removed the affected plants but could someone help explain why this happens? My substrate is AS Africana, Lighting 1 wpg with T5 lights . I have good circulation in the tank. No co2. Dosing with modified EI method like Tom Barr's advice. Tank is 4 feet.
The joy of learning overwhelms me.

apparently this is quite normal, even Mr Amano face the same problem. Its definitely has something to do with lights although I am not sure if it's deficiency. Its probably have to do with path of lights as the bottom part is mostly blocked so no matter how much lkight you put in , it will still be blocked.
