The problem is probably not with your filter media.
How many rummynose do you have in your tank?
Recently I bought a dolphin Hang on Back filter for my 10 litre tank, i bought model with the smallest capacity I believe.
Problem is, my rummynoses are dying one every couple of days
And I've noticed that the filter media that came with my dolphin HOB filter was a black sponge with many coarse holes. Is this sponge good enough for beneficial bacteria to thrive?
Or do i need to get ceramic rings and/or other types of filter media?
I saw some ceramic rings at a few LFS and they come in big buckets! too costly and not logical for me to buy so much just for my nano filter..
Please advice! Thank you!

4 rummynose and 1 albino cory
now left with 2 rummynose and 1 albino cory
My tank is a 10litre one, with a few plants
Is it a newly setup tank? Did you cycle it?
Don't be panic into doing large percentage water change, if you wish to, you can run an air stone in the tank for the time being.

Yup, it is a newly set up tank, only 2 days old.
What I am worried is that the filter media (black sponge thing) in my cheap HOB filter only acts as a mechanical filter to remove debris from the tank.
And beneficial bacteria will never be able to thrive in that filter media of mine
Edit: And I havent done any water change yet
Bacterial is able to colonize any media, so your sponge serves 2 purposes, mechanical as well as biological. However, longer term, since you will eventually take out the sponge and I suppose, rinse it or even replace it, it would be good to have some more permanent biological media.

2 days old setup? your tank is not fully cycle yet. Do you use old media? What substrate do you use?
Green gex soil, bought from seaview
1more rummynose dead
2 day old tank and filter + rummynoses = not a good idea rummynoses are quite sensitive. Should cycle your tank first!
they died because you didn't cycle your tank. Same thing happened to me when I first started fish keeping. The only thing you can do to help is to add more beneficial bacteria. Try add the "gold" from someone's tank filter to your sponge.
Try adding 2 prawn head and psb to cycle ur tanhk e i wk make sure u use anti choline for wc.
the black sponge should do fine, but if you want ceramic rings, you could get the DAZ type which comes in very small pack for a few bucks. They are black in color
Agree sponge can be enough but adding ceramic rings will help as they provide more surface area to volume ratio for bacteria to colonize.
Your rummynoses are dying due to a none cycled tank. There is not enough bacteria and bacteria of the correct type in your tank. They need time to grow.
For now try to do as much water changes to keep ammonia low and can try to use products like ammolock to keep ammonia levels down.
Cheers,
JJ
