Re: Priming a Canister Filter: Need Help

I never use mouth, use a hand pump of a siphon. Remove the hose attached to the siphon (hand pump) and attach it to the filter outlet hose and start pumping (all done within the tank itself). Once water flows through, remove hand pump and attach the filter outlet hose to the rain bar. Its pretty easy. Hope I explain it well, anyway, just use any pump from whatever siphon you have, it should work. I use this method for both my eheim 2213 and 2217.

Fill the Filter with tank water to its maximum before priming with the hand pump is key.

fill the canister, connect hose from the tap at the inlet, turn on the tap, wait till water come out from outlet , plug in power.. and remove the hose that is connected to tap and everything should start working..

i gave up after many times with using the priming button on the filters and use mouth as well. nothing unhygenic since it's water your fishes are living in. Just make sure you don't drink it!!

I do not know how many thread of priming canister I've read but here goes, again. Get the Eheim Installation Set for the Inlet side. It is as easy as opening the cap, pour water into it, close back the cap and start the canister filter. A one time purchase for a permanent solution. No need to use your mouth or an additional pump.

    HI BFG,

Actually, i bought the installation set you mentioned. I still had a problem priming the 2224. Even though I keep topping up the inlet pipes with water till full, the plastic part of it which was submersed in the water cannot be filled. Despite many attempts, still didn't work.

I ended up carrying the 2224 to level with my tank so that the water get suck up properly via the installation set and put the filter back down only when it started flowing.... Hard lesson.. haha

Maybe there is some trick to it, but I followed closely to the very very brief manual and had no success.

Re: Priming a Canister Filter: Need Help

Hmm, something is definitely wrong with your setup MikeAng. The plastic part should be in the tank and the other end is outside of the tank. The cap should be outside the tank, not inside. When you open the cap to pour water in it, the water should be flowing down to the canister.

Only problem with this is method is that you can only use it when you are initially setting up the filter.

You don't really want to be introducing chlorinated water into an established filter, if you need to prime it again after maintenance or if the flow somehow breaks.

I also suck by mouth.. I've tried using powerheads and also manual bulb siphons, but it just doesn't work as well and is a bit too fiddly.

Thanks a lot for all your input, bros.

    I have three canister filters...all non-self priming

Bro, i use syringe to fill the pipes up before i connect.
My atman has the ball valve to shut the flow so i just closed it when the canister has been filled.

I had an idea once, to use a PVC "T" joint connected to a ball valve but it didn't materialize due to cannot find correct size.

actually you don't need to such until water touching your mouth, you just need to such a bit to start the flow. Once the flow start the gravity will take care of it. Also you can always use your palm to cover the hose that way you actually sucking you hand instead of the hose.

another way is to remove the outlet pipe and place it in a pail, when water start to flow into the pail, connect the outlet back to the tank and start the pump... this also works but might have water spills sometimes.
