I tried b4 using an ice-cream box.
What I did was to take out all my trimmings and those that rots became the "substrate". I keep my water level low, usually using those water from weekly changes as I dun have to care about the high nitrate levels(cheapo!) The glosso. will juz grow above the water level and whenever I need trimmings, I juz cut them off, without any fear of algae.
If u are talking about growing it for landscapin, aka "bonsai" type, then juz ignore all that I've written!

I have some growing outdoor in a big flowerpot. Got to keep the soil damp initially or it will dry up & die off. Once take root, they will spread like wildfire, algae-free[:]You can try those jelly-like "soil" that can hold water for a long time. Glosso do love direct sun at that stage.
