Tonight, I tried my hand at a DIY CO2 canister made out of a 1 litre PET bottle with a kind of screw in stop valve and rubber hose. Mixed the ingredients and left it for about 20 minutes. I release the stop valve and heard a soft sound of gas escaping but no other sound so far. I have placed the end of the tube next to the hand on filter of my 1 foot tank and waited....and waited.....and waited. How do I know that CO2 is being produced? I know this DIY system is erratic but is there a way of knowing if it is working?

Also, is there a way of figuring out how much CO2 is being produced (or even controlling the amount to be released)? Or is this only possible with a proper CO2 system?

look into your pet bottle. if you see tiny bubbles rising from your concoction, co2 is being produced.
use a bubble counter to check the co2 generation rate. similar to co2 canister bubbles per second (bps).
