In my opinion quartz is all right as a substrate. But you will have to consider the kind of aquarium that you are setting up.. Eg, some corys or btm sifters might find it a little too rough and hurt their delicate feelers..
Someone jsut gave me a bag of black quartz-like sand and I would like to know if I can use this as a substrate over some fertiliser and grow plants in this? Not sure of the name of this material but it isn't expensive and the former owner could not tell me the name either. All I know is that it cost him about $2-$3 a bag of about 500g. Tried taking photos but can't seem to get a good enough shot to post. Either the glare kills the shot or the shot just turns up all black!

I used that for my cherries.. they're doing fine...
I plan to put some fertiliser base under the Black quartz-like sand in my 1 footer tank. So how thick a layer should that sand be? Can I try growing HC in that? Only Neon Tetras in there so more Corys could get hurt.
