    hi,

got a tub of christmas moss with Fishy/seaweed smell. i am guessing it got stored in there for too long. i tried rinsing it in water a few times but the smell is still there. is there a way to get rid of the smell? is it safe to put into my tank? right now i have it in a bigger tub of water.

thanks for any advice. will adding charcoal help?

Does the moss look healthy and green though?

Soak it for a day or two more, changing 100% of the water each day and see if it gets better.

I've never had moss that smells fishy, usually it just smells earthy, I've even tried leaving moss inside of the bag it came in for 2 months before. It was still ok, but I had been giving it light.

The smell may be dued to cladophora algae growing amongst your moss...see if you can pull out any green branching threadlike strands? They look like your moss "stems" without fronds

I may be wrong of course...may be blue green algae or just the smell of stale moss!

cannot find the algae. think it is just kept in the tub too long. i tried cleaning it by rinsing and rubbing them with my fingers. the smell get less. dump 1/2 the quantity and now soaking the rest in new tub of water. see how it goes today. if still bad i might just have to throw everything.

Re: christmas moss with fishy/seaweed smell

I bought a bag of Anchor moss from NA that I kept sealed in the plastic bag in came in for more than 2 months (almost 3 months)

I gave it 4 - 5 hours of light daily (25w energy saving bulb, distance 5cm), and never opened the bag at all, but I did shake it and rotate the bag weekly.

By the time I opened it the rubber band was already turning sticky and was very loose, but the moss was perfectly fine, and still quite green, and smelled like fresh moss.

Seed shrimp still managed to hitchhike on it though... I thought my 2 mth in plastic bag quarantine method was good enough.
