No. they don't even need a substrate. water column fert dosing is more than enough
Hi guys,
I was just wondering if Java fern and dwarf nana require "nutrient-rich" substrates like ADA soil/GEX? I read on a couple of books and websites that you shouldn't bury their rhizomes into the substrate and that you should place them on top of the substrate, tie them down to a weight and let them take root..So is it possible for them to survive with an inert pea-sized substrate with fortnightly liquid-fert dosing? Thanks!

liquid fertilizer dosing
Thanks! might not have to buy ADA soil after all..
But, it depends on what else you are using.
Java Fern and Anubias are typically not planted in the substrate at all but rather tied to something.
But, if you have any "planted" plants, you need to consider the substrate carefully. Some things, like Aquasoil are full of nutrients to kick start plant growth. Other inert substrates force you to provide all the ferts in the water itself. Both can work, just read up on it before you decide. Substrate is the one thing in a planted tank that's far from easy to change.
