Got a question about tank heaters:

Is there a thermostat built into them such that I can set the temperature? Or do they usually heat the water to a preset temperature?

I have a small heater with no such adjustments. Will it heat the water to too high a temp if I leave it on all the while? So far, in an air-con room and depending on the coldness, it usually heats the water maximum till about 29 or 30 deg in the 10 hours I left it on.

Hi, most heaters I saw have temp settings that you can set and the thermostat should help to maintain the tank at the required temperature.

    Cheers.

As far as I know, there is a range of heaters from 150watts to 400 watts. Depending on the size of your tank, you need to select the one suited for it. Some of the heaters have thermostats to adjust from 25 to 32-33 degrees Celcius. I am using a 300watt with thermostat in my 3ft tank, which I set at 29 C. It automatically switches on and off by itself depending on temp. There is also a red led to show when it is on.

    Koah Fong,

Most or all heaters should have a thermostat to preset the temp. Baiscally, the heater should turn on/off at desired temp.

Didn't the heater you got come with an operational manual?
    Cheers!!

    Sherwin:

You won't believe it. The little French-made heater was given to me sometime in 1978. And I have no use of it till recently. It still work though, surprisingly.

The markings on it says 220V, 35W and I am using it for a 2.5ft tank. I think not enough power because the maximum it went in the office air-con room is 26.8 deg with the PL lights on. It used to go up till 29 deg for a 2ft tank.

At only 35W, I dun think ur heater is capable of heating ur 2.5ft tank to the required temp. Heat generated < Heat loss (especially in an air-con room). Perhaps you should consider upgrading to a heater with a higher power output (may 200-300W).

    Cheers.
