If timing is an issue, I find that a timer helps save some hassle. You can set it for about 8 hours per day and have it stop at a fixed time at night. Usually Java ferns, Java moss or Nanas can do well in low light conditions (not no light). Java ferns and Nanas are better off tied to driftwood (and not planted in the substrate). I find that interesting shaped driftwood can provide hiding places for bottom dwelling fish while Java moss can be tied to drfitwood, coconut husks or stones. It depends on how much plants you put in a tank but if not too much, you might be able to get away without using CO2. Some ferts will not hurt either.
