How do I tell these 2 apart? I had read the article on planetcatfish and thought I know how to tell the differences. But I went to a lfs saw some cories that looks more like Julii rather than trilineatus. They are kind of small in size and spottish rather than wavy. Isn't Julii suppose to be very rare? Or are what I saw spottish trilineatus?

the difference is the markings on the head area, juilis has dots, trilineatus has patches or irregular markings

Will it be correct to say if I see a "leopard" cory with spotty marking and dots on the head it defintely a julii? Beside trilineatus and julii could it be another species?

    Thanks

    hi all,

sorry to bring up such an old thread. but this is really making me wonder.

    DEA,
if it's the other three species, there wouldn't be a line at the sides right? just wondering if there's any fail-safe way to do this.

    thanks!

Julii has quite small dots. They look quite similar to Simils except that they do not have the blue colour near to the end of the body. (That's when the first time I look at it)

Trilineatus normally has bigger patches as though 3 dots merged together. Some has the slight var. with much larger patches overlapping.

I saw a few Julii in a Taipei shop. Doesn't look very healthy but cost abt S$1.50 only. I did not get them as they just brought them in only ... probably later.

    hi all,

thanks very much for your quick response. I came across a pic that showed dots making up the markings of the tail fin. Could this be one of features that we can use to identify julii? And also, would a julii be "identifiable" when they are young? IF you ID a cory as a julii (especially a juvenile one) could it as it grow show lines instead of spots, thus = wrong ID?

    Thanks again!

    Hey Dennis,

You should check out the cory specalist at 124 Ming Sen Tong Road 2 Duan 2nd floor. Alfa gave me the contact and I'm impressed with the selection of corys they have there. Spotted at least 30 types during my last visit.

    Cheers,
    Benny

just to add a 'leopard' is not a trilineatus but a leopardus, whh has longer snort. they r not the same. many pple r mistaken and kept calling trilineatus as 'leopards'. julii has the finest spots on them all, and their tails do not have the radiating dots as in leopardus and trilineatus. while julii is similiar to similis, the latter does not have black patch on its dorsal fin, but has a dark blue patch near its caudal peduncle.

    julii is hard to comeby....

This might help you with ID, http://www.corydoras.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/corydoras%20.htm]Corydoras ID[/url]
I find it to be the most accurate database of Cory pics available.

    hiyah all,

thanks very much for more tips!

rain ... sorry .... but what do you mean by radiating dots?

actually, my question is also about the dots. In discus, when they are young, they have dots or what looks like dots/ spots as a marking. however, as they grow these spots grow and join to form a line. thus, what looked like a spotted discus will grow up to be actually a lined discus. does anyone know if it's the same with corydoras? ( I would suppose so?)

    Thanks!
