use your test kit to test tap water. test kits do have expiry date,
and do not keep changing water in your tank. let it stabilise since your fauna seems to bo okay. but keep a close watch.
Dunnoe whats wrong but my ammonia level seems to be spiking like mad. Already doing daily 20-30% water changes in the morning but at night when i measure the ammonia is @ 2 and nitrate is @ 25.
Mines a 4 gallon community tank with 6 tetras 3 rummy 4 harlequin and 2 ammano shrimp. I know its overstocking but i dun have this problem b4...
Start to happen when i change to Eheim HOB filter and also throwing in biohome. But i transferred a sponge from my old HOB filter.
Although ammonia @ 2, but fish and ammano shrimp seems to be the same health or even more healthy as my ammano can be seen constantly foraging for food now.
Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated!
PS: I have 2 plant growing well in my tank(dunnoe the name)

hi thanks tawauboy!
yah worried that it might be my tap i tested it and no ammonia is present. Will Monitor
Guys can i ask something... Does hair dropped into my tank cause spike in ammonia?
My tank is actually located in my balcony along with my dog which is shedding his black hair constantly and sometimes these hair drop into my tanks and got stuck among the plants. Right now there are still quite a number of dog hair lodge among my plants now.
The question is will hair produce ammonia if left in the tank untouched? Tried google and only found out hair is made of protein which might be broken down to amino acid. Is there any possibility this is contributing to a rise in ammonia in my tank?
one more thing... my PH recently just dived to 6.0 the lowest i can measure in my PH test kit(solution type). Put some PH up inside liao to try and bring it back up
hair is pretty inert. It will take a while to decompose.
seems like my c02 is causing the ph dive =( Gotta off it for the time being. Ammonia still not sorted out yet =(
Frustrating
try some floating plants to consume some ammonia. if your fish don't seem bothered and are healthy then i don't think you need to worry
Hm.. ok will do. Managed to find 1 single duck weed in the bag of my betta channoides wonder will 1 single duck weed multiply? lol
yeah but duckweed is extremely irritating to remove after a while. larger floating plants like frogbit are easier to manage. cheap too.
Hi Tristan,
will frogbits start to die off if the ammonia is too high?
your fish will die first
