A truly beautiful fish, the red cheeks come out when the fish has matured, at about months onwards.

Very nice picture. Beautiful fins! Great luck.

I picked up a Apistogramma cacatuoides male today. Not sure of the variety. Has a orange, black & white flame/spot pattern on the Dorsal and Anal fins. The caudal fin has color on the top half. Going to try to find out more about him and locate a mate.

Cacatuoides are really one of the most beautiful strains of apistogramma. For some reason, I like the Orangle flash/sunburst variant more than the triple red variant. To each his own, though.

Oh yeah, be on the lookout for warped heads and swimming disorders caused by excessive inbreeding when you're buying aquarium strains of apistogramma.

Thanks for the info. There is not much in the way of choice here in Apistogrammas. Everything is African cichlids. I bred several varieties in the early 1970's and now I am coming back to tetras and cichlids that will not kill them. Those Africans are tough on everybody.
I have three ponds and was just offered a Siberian Sturgeon ( Acipenser baerii ). Never know what you are going to get next. Anything that can winter over, I will take a look at.

This is amazing. I only come in here (this folder) once a month and found this nice specimen.
