hi all. i have gotten hold of a tank measuring 40(l) by 25(b) by 28(h),a 28 liter tank. Im looking forward to setting up a mossy tank. However, im having problems with the lighting. How much watts should i go with?

    Re: lighting question

Is it a low tech set up? My tank has the same dimension as you except for the length. I'm using 15 watt for my 1.5 ft (30 litre) tank, following tom barr 1.5 to 2 watts per gallon rule for low tech planted tank setup but i heard that this rule might not apply on small tank. Anyway my plants are growing well, i have mini riccia, flame moss, mini nana, golden nana, mh and hm. Moss don't really require high light thus 12 to 15 watt will be fine

    Re: lighting question

Well, i'm currently using a 1.5 feet dymax FL lightset with T8 (15watt) arcadia fresh water lamp. The stand for the light is adjustable therefore the only problem is that the lightset will have around 2.5cm protrude out from ur tank at each side if you use it on a 40 cm tank. You can still use 1.5 feet FL lightset if you don't mind about the lightset being slightly bigger then your tank. IMO, i think it's ok to use 1.5 feet FL light for your tank, provided it has a adjustable stand.

To me, Fl and Pl both not much difference, just use what you think is suitable for you. But i'm pretty sure you won't go wrong with my light setup, a 1.5 feet T8 FL lightset and switch to T8 (15watt) arcadia fresh water lamp. Anyway, if you don't exceed 15-16 watt, should be fine.

i have tried using 1.5ft FL lighting on a 1ft cube before and the growth is super duper slow . Like what bro madnugget said, Pl is better because it is brighter at the expense of the heat emitted

IMO, if you are going with a moss set up, you won't need brighter light and deeper penetration. Anyway just go for what you think best for you.

Oo, wonderful. Guess 2 clip on is better then one over size 1.5 ft light set . Happy planting bro
