I have been told that Rosy Barbs will eat hair algae. Anyone have any experience with them in a planted tank?

I have a rosy barb in my small tank. never see him eat hair algae before. LOL he just chases other fish around. rosy barb will chase and nip other fish unless you keep a group.

Otos will clear the brown algae on the tank glass. Just had 2 otos into a 2 footer smeared with brown and it was gone overnight!

    Re: Best livestock for algae

Hi....I had a bad algae problem, BBA and BGA for 2 months. I did a complete 100% water change, suck out as much algae as I can, got every algae eating fish and shrimp I can get my hands on. Now no more BGA, the BBA is diminishing, now worry soon not enough algae to keep them alive!

Nerite snail is good for cleaning green spot algae, but they will lay eggs around rock, wood and glass.

Very difficult to get rid of the eggs. Just be prepared to see green spots been replaced by white spots.
    Finally started my first tank

    Re: Best livestock for algae

The fastest and easiest way to control algae is to use 1st duckweed, 2nd amazonian frog bits, 3rd water hyacinth or water lettuce. The good old theory of plants vs algae never fails. just throw away the excess plants once they flood the surface.

I agree and understand your intention of introducing fast nutrient-absorbing plants. But I still have to warn those intending to introduce duckweeds - as they will multiply on the surface and you will find it difficult to remove them later.

    Re: Best livestock for algae

True, I had the same issues too, but I rather clear them than algae. I normally use them at the start and clear them when my stem plants mature. I normally use amazonian frog bits for most times. Easy to remove and provide good sanctuary for my shrimplets.
