I believe Dennerle only have FL (flourescent light) tubes, no PL tubes.

Anyway, I used 3085 Trocal Plant. I do not find it special. Yes, it is very "yellow". It is because it has very high red spectrum. Nowadays I go for normal 6500K daylight flourescent or PL tubes.

Plant lights tend to be pink in color.

Yes, 3085 is very yellow... in fact looks orangy to me.

I have stop using those specialised tubes. They are too expensive IMO. I converted to normal daylight FL and PL tubes. Good enough IMO at less than 1/2 the cost.

Like bclee, I do not like the yellow-orangish hue of the 3085 (I think it means 3000K and Ra of more than 85). The colour make me feel warm and moody in the tank. I also think 6500K seems to be just right.

Basically, Dennerle FL lights are tri-phosphor lamps, meaning that the output spectrums are concentrated and peaked narrowly at 3 bands. The maker (I think it is a German OEM) just play about with the 3 bands' peak levels using a cocoon of modified phosphors. The targeted results are horned at wide selection of light colour tones and types for planted tank. Those that peak more at the red spectrum are said to be better for the plant growth. That's why, among the confusing range, 3085 is Dennerle most encoraged light for plant.

The newer Dennerle lights comes with UV light block, meant to avoid algae. The technic, I beleive, is a laminate of UV shield sheet over the tube.

To save money, one can actually compromise by buying tri-phosphor lamps from brands like NEC, Hitachi, National, etc.

    srad,

One way to use the dennerle 3085 lamp is to shift it to the tank's back. Then place "whiter" lights like 6500K lamps at middle and/or front of tank.

In this way, the contrasting lighting effect (will be supple and natural, I had tried it) will make the tank seems deeper/wider while enjoying the benifit of the 3085.

    Have fun,
