Any ideas on modifying the lights?

As you can see the inner light hood has a built in clear plastic splash guard for the 9W pl inside. There are 2 screws so i assume its possible to remove the light without breaking the hood.

Do you guys have any idea what can I do with this? Was thinking of replacing the light fixture as this one heats up the tank too much, plus I was thinking of achieving more watts per gallon. Also Im not very well versed in the DIY lingo so please bear with me.
