    hi all,

i'm looking at getting an external canister filter for my 30l tank.
i've seen these 2 online but there're very little details:
    - shibura x303 (360l/hr)
    - eden 511 (600l/hr) / eden 501 (300l/hr) are these available in lfs in SG?

so i'm wondering if there are any users out there with experience with these 2?

    i want to know if:
    1. r they quiet? or do they have a loud hum? do they have rubber stops at the bottom to minimise the hum?
    2. do they self-prime? or you need to manual prime?
    3. can i just buy generic filter medium to replace those in the filters?
    4. are they easy to maintain? how often do you have to clean?
    5. are parts easy to replace? are spare parts easily available?
    6. what is the thickness of the tubes?

    thanks for your time.

you should buy the ehiem 2211
wuhu at tiong bahrhu having sale $80
    hose is 9mm
    filter media easy to change
    filter media is generic
maybe change the filter media every 5 to 6 months

if you want i can go and get for you because he will give me like free filter media and those stuff

you dont really have to touch the filter for 5 to 6 months until you change media and the filter is very silent and the parts dont really break down but the parts are somewhat easy to find and i dont really know what you mean by prime

    Re: mini canister filter recommendations?

I have an Eden 501 previously used for a 1' cube; and it works great.
It's not self priming, but given the small size, it's not necessary IMO. For a 30l tank, the brands/models you've indicated works great.

If I'm not wrong, all the questions listed 1-6 are 'positive' answers, ie no one has much complaints about them. You do need to know that these small canisters are meant to be used "at the same level" as the tank - ie they should be hung or placed BESIDE the tank; and not BELOW the tank as one would expect from the other (larger) canisters.

Their popularity has even sparked off 'look alikes' from Boyu and others, so you can be sure it's 'good'.

Duncan's recommendation of a 2211 is also an excellent choice, after all, it's Ehiem.
    Hope this helps somewhat.

By the way, if there's any intention to possibly upgrade to a larger tank (eg 2'), then these models will be underpowered (as is the 2211).

then if you should have future plans on upgrading tank size you should get the 2213 which is not alot ore expensive
the 2211 is enough for a 40x40x40 tank
so its really up to you

last year when i bought my 2211, NA was better priced than C328 but i cant remember the exact and since wuhu is selling at $80, it is a good price and lower than my buying price which is between 80 to 100. it doesnt come with tap but has filter medium, the blue and white one.

    Re: mini canister filter recommendations?

i have a Eden501. its good and quiet. Only con i can see is during maintenance. when u remove the connecting tubes, the water will just flow out. there is no valve control to lock the water in the tube. I have no such problem as i use it outdoor in my balcony area. no priming. have to topup water to the top, then put back the cover. Maintenance process sure will have some water dripping every where

I just bought another for inhouse use, ADA MC-915. flow rate 800L/H, comes with full piping including rainbar and such. very quiet. best is u can lock the inlet and outlet then remove the whole mechanism and just take the canister to the toilet to wash. It has 2 trays, and the medium that comes with it is not enough in my opinion, just need to buy another pack of bio rings. coarse sponge already inside. got manual self prime. dimension is 20X20X34 cm (height is exclude the inlet/outlet assembly)

So u have to look at where u are placing the filter. can the location afford to get abit wet?

Eden501 should be in the range of $50/-
ada Mc-915 is in the range of $65 +/-

if can afford go for something that can lock the inlet/outlet valve and has manual self prime.

ehiem is good also, but i find them very much over priced for the same performance.

ehiem parts are also easier to find and replace. it lasts very long too which is good provided you last long in this hobby.

I currently still have Eden brand canister filters (501 and 511) in use and they have been reliable so far (2+ years and still working well)... though i haven't seen replacement parts for them readily available anywhere yet.

I guess you'll just have to check and test 2nd hand ones to make sure there are no damaged or faulty parts before buying them.

In my view, these filters are relatively cheap anyways, so it'll probably be better to just buy a new unit if the old one breaks down and can't be fixed easily.

If you prefer canister filters which have a wide access to spare parts and repair support, then go for the Eheim filters, though they'll cost more initially.

The fact why I like eden is that is small and can hang discreetly behind the tank buy the conventional type is kinda too big for that.

Do u think is worth to go for the 2yr old set taking into consideration of the age or shld get a brand new one.

    I'm currently using a 2ft tank.
