Hello all, this is my first tank after decommissioning my previous almost exactly 1 year ago due to enlistment! But, with some luck I got posted to a stay out unit and have some time to set up a 2feet shrimp tank

After much thinking, wanted to place the tank in my living room on a Ikea LACK side table which costs 17.90$/-. However my mum told me to have it in her "decommissioned saloon room" where she used to cut hair for her customers

So, here the whole room is mine and I will conquer the WHOLE ROOM in time to come!!! , maybe next time.

A little box my girlfriend gave me, finally it is put into good use! My accessories box!

Hunting on the forums for a good deal for a chiller and got this from a very nice bro. Hailea C-130A Chiller. Condition I would say 9.5/10, slight user marks on the cover only.

And got a Jebo 503 cannister filter which is surprisingly quiet!

More will continue on the next post

    Re: My First CRS Tank

Everything in place and we're ready to go!

    Substrate: ADA Amazonia II
    Additives: Mosura Old Sea Mud
    Nutrafin Water Conditioner
    Azoo Bacteria Starter
(Will start using Mosura Mineral Plus & Shizhen when I'm about to start adding shrimps)

Tank given to me by a very good friend of mine. 24'' x 12'' x 20'', indeed a very tall tank!!

First, Add a thin layer of ADA Amazonia II, followed by almost one bottle of Mosura Old Sea Mud and finally a thick layer of Amazonia II to cover it all up

    Re: My First CRS Tank

With everything set up, I'm ready to test the chiller!

Every half hour I checked the temperature difference between the chiller and the tank. And to my surprise they tally or at most with deg C difference!

Chiller starts to kick in at 25deg C as I've set to 24deg C. And when my chiller kick start, my tank temperature was 24.8deg C, I find that difference not too bad. Is there a need for a external thermostat for this case?

I'm a lucky dude to have a air-con repairmen uncle , these are what I've got from him! Insulating pipes which can help to keep my water cooler, longer!!

This is what my Biotechnology taught my in the past 3 years

Keeping a Log Book allows consistency and accuracy for comparisons in the future!

    Here's the parameters for day1

    pH: 7.0 - 7.5
    gH: 3
    NO3: 5ppm
    NH4: Not tested.

Anyway, as there's no Nitrosomanas nor Nitrobacter to break down Ammonia, the levels of NO3 or NO2 should be quite low as the chart from ADA shows that Amazonia II is low in Nitrates/Nitrites. (Tried finding that picture but can't), once there is a sudden spike in Nitrates in my water, I will know that my tank is starting to complete it's cycle. This is the reason why I omitted the Ammonia test for now. (Also to save some money lah

Hehe, really have to thank you for your guidance!

Still contemplating to DIY a external thermostat. Anyway, won't the sudden cut off of power for the chiller be detrimental to it in the long run?

Heh! Yes time really flies, I miss my 4ft too.. Miss my harlequin rasboras which were happily swimming in the tank, but I guess there's a chance for a better set up. (with better equipments too!)

Haha, not exactly 8-5pm as I'm still combat fit (PES B). In a shift work unit that's why! It's all good there, have very good superiors (WO, 2IC, OC)

    Re: My First CRS Tank

    Updates on water parameters

    Day1

    pH: 7.0 - 7.5
    gH: 3
    NO3: approx 5ppm

    Day2

    pH: 6.0 - 6.5
    gH: 3
    NO3: 0 - 5ppm

    Day3

    pH: 6.0
    gH: 3
    NO3: 0ppm

wooohooo going to get my ammonia test kit tomorrow.

One thing, my water is still a little bit cloudy, is it normal for ADA Amazonia II?

    Re: My First CRS Tank

    One question.

How do you use the Aquarium Calculator for Chillers?

    Let's say Hailea C-130A

    Voltage: 220 - 240V
    Working Current: 0.8Amps

To derive Wattage = 220 (best case scenario) x 0.8
    = 176W

So I visually estimated that every the chiller will kick-off at every other hour. (ie, work for 1hour, stop for 1hour). So I fill in, Duration as 24hrs, and Interval as 24hrs too? So that's how I derive my estimated bill/mth?

    Thanks in advance to all

    Re: My First CRS Tank

heard from some bro who use the ADA soil, they complain that the water is still cloudy dispite its already few days of cycling. it should be because of the water current / flow rate too fast causing the debries to stir up.

that time when i was doing my shrimp rack, i use those fine sieve to sieve out those smaller soil. suprisingly, i can get like 200gram of very fine soil.

No wonder, that's quite irritating haha!

Nevermind I guess, just let the tank cycle and slowly clear up. Hopefully the BB will eventually take care of the water clarity as well.

By the way, heard that Hill Stream Loaches are fine for CRS comm as well?
