can cardinal be kept with glass fish.... just a question here!
I thought glass fish are...quite hostile! maybe i am wrong!
hi all,
i have 35cm tank with 2 cardinal tetras (m) and 2 glass fish. they are relatively new to the tank but seem to adapt well to the environment alrdy. i feed them semi floating pellets but only the glassfish are eating.
im starting to worry for the tetras as they nvr seem to eat even when the pellets are sinking.
can cardinal be kept with glass fish.... just a question here!

i don't know too but they seem to live alright together. they school tgt occasionally.
is it necessary to rear more than 2? i read somewhere that we shld rear like 5-10 tgt?

okay noted thanks
Cardinal tetra eat very little. They might be stressed because they need to be kept in a school of 6 or more depending the size of your setup.
2 is a tad too little
What is glass fish?

yes i went to get 4 more today and they look much happier now. but still, they don't seem to eat. i am worried if they are sick.
I think the full name is blood fin tetra or something like that. has a red tail and transparent body.
It is ok. Fishes won't die from starving for 2-3days. But will definitely result in death if without water change.

okay, the original tetras died but the glass fish are fine and are clearly getting braver over the past few days.
i checked the ph, roughly 5.5. is it too low? whereas for the temperature i kept it at 27-29 degree celsius. unfortunately, i do not have the test kit to test the ammonia levels. but i presume its alright since the glass fish are so alive. or am i wrong?
Please conduct 25% water change on every 3 days.
Feed only every other day.
It will work.

I use flakes, and use a tweezer to hold it. Semi-Submerged
Initial they are quite shy, Now they are fierce even wanna bite my tweezer.
And get them in a school helps, initially i had lesser numbers they quite shy
But sometimes i see their colour fade but when i come back 30mins later they are okay.
i think i need more help guys!
the ph level seems to be dropping so now i am conducting water change every other day. also there seems to be a level of dirt/oil on the surface of the water. any of you guys know why and how to fix this? thanks alot.
ok hope this helps.
My tetras seems to like flakes, especially the brand Tetraflakes, i think it's slightly more expensive than other brands. they like TetraBits too.
tried feeding them some other cheap flake brand once and they spat it out..
And using same method as skytan mentioned, use a tweezer to hold the flakes submerged in the tank. it keeps the surface of water clear of food debris which would possibly turn into a layer of oil in future.
to remove oil, dirt, use an empty container, and push it slowly straight down in the tank. not scooping, but pushing it vertically down, with the opening on top, so the surface of water will fall evenly into the container
thanks roxs. i was trying to scoop the layer away but to no avail. the pushing vertically down method works.
anyway, the tetras are starting to eat the food i feed them. i am just wondering why the previous tetras died, left with only one tetra now. while the 2 glass fishes seem to be able to live in any condition. beats me.
No problem tsubasa28. reminds me of the days i spend in the army office taking care of a 35cm tank too. haha.
I can guess a number of reasons why your tetras died.
1. Cardinal tetras i think are more delicate fishes. glass fishes are probably more sturdy.
2. aqua obession metioned eariler, that glass fishes are hostile, you can observe your fishes, and see if your glass fishes are chasing after your tetras.
Iif that is so, well.. your tetras are probably under a little stress.. and from what i know.. my fishes usually die easily from stress, but..
3. If its not the glass fishes fault, it would than be your water condition.
Basically add more plants
fill your tank with plants, wouldn't hurt, cabomba plants are great, they last long. (and your fish would probably feel safer, thus less stress)
And importantly have a hang-on filter running to process and recycle the water
If your tank is new, you probably haven't have a proper water "ecosystem" running yet, could be another reason.
You can tell us more about your tank set up, so the members can diagnose the problem.

i was thinking the lowering ph could be due to your soil.. maybe you should share with everyone what kinda of soil you got
