Hi .. I have been to a few fish shops and I noticed most of them are usually not very bothered to tell you anything...

most of the shops are too busy to entertain you or they cant be bothered...

can someone introduce a shop with good service and have fair amount of things selling like equipments , plants , fish..

i believe that it is better to find your answer online from google search.
for cheap equipment, try colourful, NA or auntie shop at C328.

Kenny, have you been to Seaview at Seletar? From my experience, the sales staffs are quite helpful and willing to answer your enquiries. You can try them out.

Re: LFS that are informative and well stocked

I do not place much faith and advice from most people running LFSes. Just the other day, a staff from a renowned fish shop was telling me that dwarf corys need no be fed. He pointed to one scavenging on a plant leaf, 'See it's eating micro-organisms.' My brother in law once bought a red arowana from a fish farm. He put it in a tank that was set up on the same day with 'miracle solution' suppiled together with advice from the fish farm. Well, it was a miracle the aro survived.
Even some books have outdated advice as they may have been published a long time back.

You just need to do more research online.

Re: LFS that are informative and well stocked

I haven't checked out the plant labelling at Seaview, but they have labelled fishes wrongly before. In my case, they mixed up R. hengeli with R. espei in the same tank, with a few R. harlequin as well.

I think the point we want to make is that some of the helpful shop staff may not exactly be well informed. Plus, there are lots of contradicting information on fish keeping. If you depend on one source, you may not be getting the full picture.

Re: LFS that are informative and well stocked

ha ha, i have given up asking for names already, maybe a couple of places like seaview and Sam's Pet.

The other day I was shopping for Echinidorous and asked the shop keeper, "uncle this type will grow tall or not?" then he replied "eh, this one not so tall ......just a bit tall."

end of the day we just have to trial and error. But having said that, there are so many hybrid species of different plants, its difficult for them to keep track also

but having said that, this is really a good opportunity for budding LFS owners, if you could set up a shop with all this knowledge thrown in, then i guess it will be pretty good business

Suggest you guys get good books on plants and fishes. Then bring with you when you shop.

Re: LFS that are informative and well stocked

Can't blame them, there are hundreds of plants species and each have different sizes. Not to mention for the same species the leaf length can vary depend on the water/soil condition.

    For example
Vallisneria nana height can be 30cm - 80cm

Echinodorus tenellus height can be 5cm - 10cm
    http://www.tropica.com/plants/plantd...n.aspx?pid=067

You can check Tropica web site, you should find that plant size can be wildly varies

I've just went to Seaview last Monday and yes I agree that they are quite helpful.

Although you need to 'self-service' most of the time, they are readily to help you when you ask them.

Re: LFS that are informative and well stocked

Yes, I always enjoyed visiting Seaview. They have wide variety of product/fishes, discounts + good service and not so clustered. There was once when I asked for a certain medicine which I used to get from them and which run out of stock, the staff there just said they do not keep track of what is being sold there, they just take whatever their supplier provide, but they will try to replenish whatever is sold out as soon as possible. Though I didn't get much of an answer, however, the staff was quite polite and the product was really replenished the following week when I visited again.

If you talk about good service, aunty at C328 is another one. She didn't mind going upstairs to get the stock when it is not available at the shop (it happened many times) or even place an order if she doesn't have any in stock, even though the shop was really very crowded at the time. The only setback is, the place is too clustered, I will only stay in there of a couple of minutes, then leave, its difficult to stay on browsing around. If you are looking for something particular, just ask aunty, its a headache to search.

Agree, C328 auntie is very helpful, but not so helpful from the others.. Like that day i bought 3 horned nerite snails, i ask the youngest kid in the shop, "is it alright for me to keep this in a slightly salted tank?", this is what he answer me "Errr.. better not.. they might die..". i look through the net after i get home and found out horned nerite snail do fine in both fresh and slightly salted tank..

C328 always so crowded and sometime hving trouble asking for price.. Best is research online before you buy. Or go to less crowded shop ask for more information and go to cheaper shop to buy.
