fan needed?

All the plants that i had can adapt to temperature of at most 28 degree.(Check before getting the plant) But my tank temperature is from 28 to 29 degree. I brought a oceanfree dc fan (as most people said that dc fan is quieter). But the noise that is produce is very disturbing. Not as loud as ac fan but is of higher pitch. What can i do to lower the teperature without causing too much noise?(cause my house is very quiet) Me can't afford a chiller right now at this moment. Can i forget about the fan and let my tank temperatutre to remain as it is?(28 - 29 degree)

Mmm ... didn't know that there are branded, albeit 'Oceanfree', DC fans on sale. I know 3 ways to lower the temperature - (1) Fans, (2) Chiller and (3) Install air-conditioning your whole room.

Whether you can make do with 28-29C depends on the plants you are keeping. Let us know their names and some of us (who have tried them before) may be able to tell you more.

Maybe set the fan on timer and only turn it on when you are asleep or not at home?
If you do not have a tank hood, a well ventilated room helps to cool the water as well. Eg. leaving the windows open.

A hood is the cover ppl put on top of the tank to hide all the lights, fans, etc.

My tank is usually cooled via a chiller but is somehow not working now (have a check once i have some time). The temp now is hovering at about 29~30deg and plants are ok.

Then again, we've been having rather cool weather these days so, other than those low low temp demanding plants, it be should be ok to go without a fan for now. Or else you can switch on your fan at intervals to reduce the disturbing sound.

I read somewhere in the net... The Iceprobe thingy uses heatsink theory. a fan cools the finned end of a long cylinder, the other end is inserted into the water. Having multiple of these will cool the water

I rather use a fan... if not DIY these cooler probe also seems easy. get a few Al pipes attach (weld) one end to heatsink, a fan on top of the heatsink. Or do up ten and align them, place in a wire truncking and attach a fan to blow the lined up heat sink... DONE!

I think the ice probe falls into the chiller category.... basically it runs on thermoelectric principals similar to the EIDO chiller...

I think there was a mention of Ice Probe a few weeks/months back. Not a often topic, so a search for "Iceprobe" or "Ice probe" should dig out the few threads about it. IN one of them, there is contact information for a Marine shop that is selling it.

Search the web too for more info.

The Ice probe is designed for very small tanks. Not feasible for large tanks like 3 and 4 footers.
