go to Teo, tell them how big your tank is, they will give you enough, my 3ft they charged me $5 for a big bunch. I suppose you know how to plant?

well I did ask if you know how to plant

I find many people take a whole bunch of grass and shove it into the gravel, and arrange it as if it has been growing there. I use the padi-planting method, which is to clean and separate your grass and lay them out on a tray or something. Each bunch should be only around 5-6 strands together with their runner and roots. You can roll them together into a small bunch by holding and "pinching" their root-end together.

Next you MUST have a pair of proper pincer, if you don't, go and get it NOW.

You should plant your grass in the area you wanted in a grid fashion, ala padi fields, or fall-in-parade-square. I use 2cm for the grid size, i.e. each planting is 2cm away from each other. You should be able to roughly estimate how many bunches you need and make sure you have enough.

Now grip the root-end of a bunch with your pincer tip, locate the grid point where it should go (usually starts from a corner) and vertically PLUNGE your pincer into the substrate, ALL THE WAY until only a little (0.5 cm) of the tip of the grass can be seen. This way you ensure proper anchorage, and also the roots and runners are actually reaching the base fert instead of groping about in the gravel. Now DO NOT PULL your pincer out, while it is plunged in, RELEASE the grip so that it opens out and the gravel has a chance to fill in the gap and hold the grass. Then gently lift the pincer so that the grass doesn't come out with it.

Keep doing this until you have covered the required area.

You're DONE! Put on the lights and pump up the CO2, get ready to admire your padang.

You'd realise that you do not really need a lot of grass to cover quite a large area. [:]

wish I had grass like that.

so is planting the grass in small bunches better than planting in bigger clumps?

anyone can suggest why my hairgrass sends out pathetic runners with 1 or 2 blades only and then sometimes die off or get munched by yamatoes?
is the substrate not rich enough?

you cannot see the runners as it is below the gravel surface. once the runner has moved a certain distance away from the 'mother', they will emerge from the gravel and grows from there.

do you have enough light and nutrients? they can be grown without the benefit of base fertiliser.

oi, those stuff has been growing for more than a year leh [] for my case it took about 2 months to initially cover up everything (but still can use a comb to manicure the lawn) but it then becomes more and more dense, until even SAE has to "dive" in order to get down at the algae, and you can no longer see the gravel, EVEN if you try to part the grass.

Just tell the guys at Teo you have a 2ft tank (lie that you have a 4ft if you want more grass lah [] ) and you will give you more than enough. They are very reasonable. The amount I got for $5 probably will cost $20-30 if bought at LFS.

    Hi chow
If i am growing drawf hairgrass together with tennules, is it possible that the hairgrass will choke the tennules since it cannot be trimmed.

In other words, hairgrass cannot be planted together with other foregroung plants. Am I right?

    Thks

try your luck lah, for all you know your hairgrass may not take off

I also have moss (either Bukit Timah moss or Christmas moss) emerging amongst the grass, fighting hard to get a space. Obviously some moss fragment must have drifted down into the grass and now they have grown up.
